My girlfriend was given a Nokia N97 as a gift from her father. Unfortunately it is locked to Claro Peru.
Where is the cheapest place to get it unlocked in Melbourne? I have received one quote so far for $55.

Thanks for the advice, I had never heard of these inserts before. If a permanent unlock is impossible/too expensive I will give the inserts a go.

I'm no expert but I once scoured the internet and used the third-party "Nokia Services Suite" software to reflash the make-code and then replace the Optus firmware with the proper Nokia one on an N81. I think the phone was already unlocked to begin with though.
There are a lot of websites that promise to sell you unlock codes and so forth but I wouldn't know if they're any good or which ones to try, but I know their quotes are certainly less than $50 (more like $5-$10).
