Looking for a mobile plan for a kid

Hi, I've been researching mobile phone plans and getting nowhere! My son is in secondary school and we want to get him a basic plan with no data or a plan where there's no risk of a data shock bill….similar to the tpg plan where the data stops until you pay for your next block of data. He's got access to wifi at school so he should be ok. He's already got a phone so we just need a plan. Really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Why not pre-paid? there is no risk of a data shock bill.

  • many prepaid have auto recharge so it's close to a plan probably better value with no worries about recharging.

    • As long as they don't turn on data, which would be very tempting I'd think.

      • And if it was my kid they would be punished for their foolish ways.
Want data? Pay for it yourself.
Want money, here's a list of jobs that need doing.

  • Amaysim via Groupon $30 for 3 months ($10/mth) unlimited call/sms & 1GB data - change billing method to Bpay for no bill shock.
That buys you time to figure out what to do next.

(less than $30 if using groupon & amaysim cashback)

    Budget?
    Smart phone?
He most probably will chew up data like no tomorrow.

    Prepaid is the safest bet.

I pay this for my nephew.

There are cheaper deals out there. But we chose this as it provides telstra network

  • Prepaid is good. I'm on Lebara with unlimited calls and texts for $29 a month, with 2.5GB of data. That's plenty for what I use it for (mostly just Facebook, WhatsApp and reading the news on the train to/from work).

    • Why not go with Jeenee? Has the same deal for $25 a month.

      • Didn't even know about them. Thanks for the heads up, I'll switch next month.

        • The fine print has this, "Only available online for orders placed before 31st Jan 2016."

          :(

  • Addon On demand http://vodafone.intelliresponse.com/index.jsp?requestType=No…
Most flexible option on voda 365 with metro areas. Plan is anything they wants: Zero data /$1.50GB LTE /no voice /talk7d unlimited. Applies budgeting.

Or any of those resold providers for half price offers.

My son is on the vodafone 365 day plan. Credit lasts for 365 days. $20 lasts him the entire school year. My phone is also on vodafone, and it's free vodafone to vodafone calls (the minutes build up).

    • good suggestion. can only find $30 min 365 plan.
thought the Virgin simple $19 plan is pretty good, expired every 3 months with cheap international call rate.

  • Consider their $50 365 recharge. (average equivalent 4.16mo) http://www.vodafone.com.au/personal/criticalinformationsumma…

I had their discount sim switched to this after quoting them 2x $10 recharge pins.

  • Hi, Thanks for all your answers. The Virgin deal looks really interesting as we're with Virgin too. Does anyone know of any plans that have no data as I know how easily data can build up! Thanks again.

    • Just switch off mobile data from the phone, plus the simple plan of Virgin is prepaid

    • please give your kid a chance to experience data.
      googling is part of life.

why not make him pay his own bill from his allowance.
let him manage it all himself.

btw… how old is the kid?

      • Hi,
Thanks everyone for your answers. Settled on the Aldi mobile deal as I can put an agreed amount on the phone on a regular basis and he can also add to it as required from his own money whilst we work out how much he uses.
Just wanted to say that he experiences data alright as he's a kid - his tablet used 45GB of data last month ….that's why I don't want him to have access to mobile data as it could be a VERY expensive lesson!!!!!!
        Thanks again for the tips

  • I gave my son my old IPhone 5c and got him a SIM card with Optus. For $5 (once off fee) you get a spare sim as part of their data sharing offer.

Since I have 10GB on my phone, any data he uses comes off my allowance.

He can send and receive text messages via iMessages or Whatsapp.

He can make and receive calls either using FaceTime audio or Whatsapp.

I switched off all unnecessary apps to only work on Wifi and not cellular.

At school and home it automatically uses wifi.

He is a typical kid, but would barely use 500mb a month with this setup
