MacBook 12in Gold 256GB - Best Price Found Is at Officeworks $1836

Hi Guys,

Missus wants to get a Macbook 12in Gold 256GB to replace her old Samsung laptop. I haven't gotten her a xmas or b'day present so was just wondering if any OzBargainers here know of a cheaper way to get it than the Officeworks $1836 price listed above?

Thanks in advance!

  • Get a macbook pro if she's coming from a windows laptop, because she's probably going to be frustrated at the fact that the 12" macbook only has 1 port.
Believe me, I've been there and done that with my mother.

Officeworks or the Apple store is the best place to get discounted apple products. When I say discounted, I mean 10% off. It's very hard to get more than that unless you have David Jones vouchers/points. David Jones also offers 12 months interest fee.

    • Yeah that's what I was thinking too but she's more interested in the aesthetics of the gold than any sort of functionality.

So long as she understands that though… better tell her one more time tonight

      • I say just forget about what she wants and get her a macbook pro. She'll learn to live with it.

      • I know you probably know this but you're paying a lot for the colour and you're losing a lot of functionality. One port, and if you want to charge and have anything plugged in at the same time you have to pay for and carry around the adaptor. Want to plug in a mouse and a usb stick? You're going to need to carry around a USB hub too.

The laptop looks cool, but it's going to annoy anyone after a short time when they try to use it practically because of the lack of ports. There are lots of really good looking laptops out there, even a few "gold" ones. The Yoga 900 comes in gold and would mop the floor with the gold Mac, pretty sure the Inspiron 11 also comes in gold. Both have the added bonus of being 2-in-1's as well. The HP Spectre x360 would also kill it in terms of power, ports, price and functionality and it is a pretty good looking computer to boot.

The Mac is a good looking piece of kit, but the port issue is a killer for most reasonable applications, plus it's not exactly a powerhouse - certainly not for the price.

For me the 1 USB-C port is a complete non-issue. I've been using an MBA for years and rarely use any USB ports. Mostly 30 seconds at a time to do a quick transfer onto a USB drive, maybe twice in five years for a mass file transfer of 50gb+ onto an external drive.

I would suggest checking how she uses her current laptop, if she's similar to me then it probably won't be an issue for her either. Might be worthwhile getting a convertible flash drive though, e.g.: https://www.sandisk.com.au/home/mobile-device-storage/ultra-…

    • I have a grey 12" MacBook 2015, and I'm generally happy with it. The Retina screen is much better than the Air range (and better value when compared against the Air if RAM and storage are your main criteria). Although, if I were to do it again, I think I would go the MacBook Pro Retina. The keyboard on the MacBook 12" just isn't up to the standard of the MacBook Pro. The single USB-C port is also a little bit limiting (Ie, being unable to use ordinary USB sticks without an adaptor is probably the only time it pops up regularly enough to be annoying).

Otherwise, the machine is pretty fantastic. It is my primary machine now and I'm generally quite fussy.

  • You can always get a decal (vinyl sticker) for a macbook pro as that's a better computer over all.

Though to be honest if her main bullet point for a new computer is "colour" rather than any functionality she's better off not using a machine she doesn't understand.

  • Actually I heard rumors of a new macbook air in gold that will be coming out soon. 12" imo is too small, a 13" is just right.

    • I would agree with you if the Air's 13" was Retina. But it isn't, and for that reason, 12" Retina trumps 13" 1440x900.

  • I'd answer OP's question rather than expressing my personal opinion on the Macbook 2015.

If you can find someone who works with Coles Group (Coles, officeworks, Coles Express, etc) their staff discount card gives you a 5% off the marked price at OW. If you can find a cheaper price elsewhere and get OW to price match it and throw in the 5% staff discount on top of it you'll land a pretty sweet deal.
