Why not just use VLC ?

        • Does VLC support the latest encrypted commercial 2D & 3D blu-ray video disc playback as well as 4K Ultra HD video playback?. And features like TrueTheatre HD and TrueThreatre 3D?. I'd say PowerDVD Ultra 15 is probably also ready for 4K blu-ray since it supports 4K video. In my suspicions i think that VLC doesn't feature any thing like that.

        • Does VLC support Blu-ray menus etc.?

        • @hollykryten: You are correct about 3D videos, but VLC player does play 4K Blu-ray and other 4K.

        • @Spectator:

What about TrueTheatre HD and TrueTheatre 3D does VLC support that?. I'd think not. You're missing out on a bit without Cyberlink Ultra and if only using VLC. That's the reason why VLC is free it doesn't have as many features as a commercial paid product.

        • The menu situation on VLC is a nightmare - so much so that it's worth getting a dedicated software player.

        • @Spectator:
How do you play Blu-ray with VLC? I tried recently and couldn't get it going.
I have a 4k tv with hdmi 2.0 and hdcp, and 980ti in the pc, hoping to play 4k Blu-ray when it comes out.

@hollykryten: Did I say it did? I only said that it could do the 4K stuff. Geez chill out. Don't get all anteater on me.

        • @Huck: Sorry to be that guy but just google "VLC Blu-ray" and I'm sure you can find your answer.

"TrueTheatre" are proprietary to Cyberlink, so, no, neither VLC nor anyone else will offer it.

(Standardized features, for example, ATMOS, that would be handled by the compatible receiver with number of speakers to match.)

          @AlexF:

Exactly. It's a feature which VLC or any other product does not have.

        • It seems VLC can't play more recent encrypted Blu-rays, I've been using Dark Knight Rises to test it and couldn't get it going (even after downloading the keys database and dynamic library), just switched to Face/Off and works fine, so still deciding whether to get this. Anyone able to play recent big studio Blu-rays on VLC?

  • As someone who got PowerDVD free for a year, I can say that I would buy it than use VLC for blu-rays. It was great. My free year ran out, but I can't justify buying it just yet as I have plenty of blu-ray player devices around the house. VCL requires extra setup and if you are running certain programs in the background or have changed your Registry around, you're gonna have a real tough time trying to set it up.

PowerDVD > VLC for physical content.

Take it from someone who used PowerDVD for a year and VLC for, well, about a decade.

The deal here is for a lifetime license for PowerDVD Ultra 15. Pretty good deal at $53.91 if you ask me. This will play blu-ray 2D & 3D plus 4K video straight out of the box and that's just the base features.

I'm using PowerDVD Ultra 12 and even that older version is great.

  • Where does it say "lifetime license for PowerDVD Ultra 15"
think it really means upgrades/updates of v15's but higher/later versions like 16 etc would need to pay extra

have v14 and think it's a great program

    • Lifetime license for version 15. Just think about it. Lifetime license for a certain version does not mean free upgrades to newer versions. It means the license will work for the lifetime of the particular version which was bought.

      • Thanks - so not a big deal, it applies to most software

        • Yeah exactly. I think we're getting a bit carried array when non subscription based software is getting the 'lifetime' word thrown about.

Looking at the release history at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PowerDVD#Version_history, they're probably looking pretty good for a version 16 release in the next two to three months based on what looks to be annual Jan - April ship dates. If you don't want to upgrade or are happy with what I assume will be a reduced upgrade license, maybe it's a good deal still and not worth waiting for.

  • How 'invasive' is PowerDVD Ultra as a media player? Thinking of buying to replace Arcsoft TMT5 (which is discontinued and fails to play many discs) but want it to be completely out of my way except when needed for Blu-rays. MPC-HC is my main media player.

    • It was good up till version 6 I Think. After that it became a massive piece of bloatware that also wanted to be your CD burner, music player and image viewer. And after this I said, 'get stuffed'.

MPC-HC is the lightest media player I think.
