White Goods/Other items for New Home

Hi OZBargainers,

I am currently building my first home (yay for life long debt) and am getting ready for the new home purchases.

I have basically nothing, so will be purchasing at minimum the following:
Fridge
Dishwasher
Microwave
Kettle
Toaster
Washing Machine
Dryer
Iron
Vacuum

As I could probably buy all these items from one shop, am I best off doing this? Will they be able to offer me a deal that would make it more worthwhile? Should I just walk into The Good Guys, or Bing Lee and tell them I need all this and ask what they can offer me? Or would I be better off hunting bargains for each item.

Any feedback would be great.

Cheers.

  • If you aren't in a hurry keep an eye on common discounts at Good guys, Bing Lee and others - I fitted out our house late last year through Good Guys with a combination of deals, I think it was about 15% off in store, then ebay had a deal which may have been another 10 or 15% on top of that plus cash rewards. By stacking deals you can save a shedload of cash.

  • First, I would narrow down what you want exactly, and how much you are willing to shell out for something that you might be living with for 10+ years.
Consider a sub to Choice (or borrowing a friend's) who are normally pretty good about reviewing this kind of stuff… just check the comments as some recommended brands/models also have lots of long-term issues (looking at you Electrolux). For example some questions:

    Fridge
Fridge/freezer? Just fridge? What size in L? What max height/width/depth? Left/right handle? Freezer on top or bottom? Ice dispenser? Cold water dispenser? White? Stainless steel? Shelves more or drawers?

I got most of this at once when I moved out (ah, memories) and I first narrowed down price range and brands to avoid, and then looked around for what was cheap. I ended up buying most at Good Guys but they didn't offer much of a special "deal" over catalogue prices.

  • Look at Qantas Online Mall, we recently purchased a 65" TV and big ice maker fridge from Appliances Online there got 23,500 FF points in all. Was 4 points per $ sent + 1 for CC. One other thing we Called Appliances online quote us and they supplied checkout voucher and saved $150 on cheapest prices we could find in OZ for both items. David Jones too had 10 QFF points per $1 spent. Not sure what points offer is currently.

    • How did you buy 65inch tV for 23,500 QFF points?

      • Paid $4700 to get the points see - "purchased and got 23,500 FF points".

  • I'm sure Masters will have cheap appliances soon! haha

    • we picked up atop of the line induction cooktop from Masters, $2200 retail and $1800 street price got it for $1410.

  • I would get a list of the items and model numbers and take them to David Jones (presently have a 4 years interest free offer on their store-card) - the prices would be matched (assuming of course the brand was in their range)and you would not be eating into our home deposit and/or borrowing capacity.
