I want like to exchange approximately $5000-$8000 aud dollars to USD.* * Into USD cash
Going to America in September/October with the family.
What is the best place to go?
-banks?
-travelex?
-online places?
I'm assuming that i would be able to negotiate a little bit with that amount of money.
I don't work near the city( work near blacktown), but am willing to make the trip pretty much anywhere in Sydney for a one off exchange.

KVB kunlun as someone said has excellent rates, reputable and generally the go to place when transacting over $2000. There's another place right next to the seven eleven in chinatown (around 735 george st) - back of the shop. They sometimes have rates that are better than KVB kunlun - but not sure for transacting $5-8k.
Honestly one of the best options is just to get the 28degrees mastercard, or another credit card with 0% conversion fee.
I found the money exchange in Blacktown Marketown gave pretty good rates. I asked them why they were more favourable than other places (comparing Castle Towers in Casle Hill) they said because the have a lot of competition. In October last year, when the exchange rate for aud/usd was similar to now, they were offering close to 1c more than everyone else.
why donyou want to exchange it? just use an atm when your over there, better rates, less cash on hand. you will lose about 100 dollars straight up, and prob get robbed if anyone gets a snuff of that amount of money.
if eorse comes to wrose and your card doesnt work use a second one, then a third, then just go into bank
One option is a HSBC multi currency account, which allows for over the counter withdraws directly in USD from your account (http://www.hsbc.com.au/1/2/foreigncurrency). In your case a new account might be overkill for a once off situation, however it's easy to close or just keep for similar situations later. I use mine to hedge against the AUD weakness by converting into USD and JPY.
