Should I build a 1150 socket or 1151 socket computer?

I am building a new computer, used for gaming and some video editing. I have been using final cut pro with a hackintosh build, and would prefer to build another hackintosh. However it seems as though the 6th gen skylake isn't supported too well with hackintosh at the moment.

Would I be dumb to build a new pc using the 1150 socket, when the 1151 is out with its 6th gen skylake cpu and ddr4 ram?

Thanks

    yes

  • So you'll be running OSX? I'd build to your hackintOSh requirement to save potential headache but strongly suspect any issues with Skylake will be swiftly resolved so maybe keep an eye out and when you start seeing success stories then go for Skylake. X86 as an architecture is about to hit a (likely) insurmountable wall in the next couple of years. We are seeing a plateu of instructions per tick. RIP X86.

    • I'll be running 90% windows 10, 10% osx when I occasionally do some video editing. That's a good point I imagine they would get skylake issues sorted soon ish, not having the osx for a while isn't a big deal (can just use my macbook for a little while) Looks like I'd be better off just building the 1151 for futureproofing

      • I haven't done any video editing in maybe a decade. Used to prefer Sony Vegas or Premiere.

        • I used to use vegas, tried a couple of others but I just find final cut and imovie much simpler for the basic stuff I do :)

        • @jumpo: All good. Just seems like a lot of overhead having OSX for a single application but that's the beauty about technology I suppose … Just keeps getting cheaper and better.

        • @kywst: Well on my old build it just happened that all the parts were compatible so all it cost me was the $100 for another ssd. But yeah I see your point, going to all the trouble of figuring out what parts work/potentially getting older parts just for compatibility just for one program is a bit silly. Thanks for making me see clearly :)

  • Go all the way: 1152, Just Do It :P

    • My time machine is out of commission atm :(

    • You're talking about Gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly Brie time baby.

  • 1150 if you need something stable i guess. 1151 would probably be a bit more future proof i suppose, maybe this hackintosh thing might be resolved soon.

I just put together a system and have priced on both, the difference is only about $30 so I went go for Socket 1151.

I came to the same conclusion so figured I'd just be smart and go 1151. Now for the most fun part of building it :D
