FREE Vodafone $2 Prepaid Multi-SIM Starter Kit with FREE Shipping @ Smart Phones Shop - Why?

original deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/231426

I placed an order for a free sim and it looked completely legit, that was until they sent me an email saying, that you need your ID, for what?. I wasn't going to risk sending them my identity for a free sim!

Any other OzBargainers fall for it and think it was legit?

I believe they legally have to take your details in order to sell you / give you a Sim.

However, I have no idea if they are legit or not.

      Wrong. Not anymore they don't.

They shouldn't need your ID at the point of purchase. The only party that needs your ID is the service provider (or a representative of that provider) who activates your service.

Merely sending out a SIM card is not activating nor initiating a service in any way, so it is very odd for them to require ID just to send a card out. Coles and Woolworths sell hundreds of SIM cards, and neither have requirements of ID anymore. The provider with which you're signing up (Optus, Telstra, Vodafone, Lyca, Lebara, Amaysim, etc) is the one to require ID.

All they really need is your name and address.

    Sounds fishy to me. Avoid.

so you were saying that they can give away your ID for you to get this, shame on you

  • Last time I bought a $2 (for like 5cents) from Kmart, I had to show ID and fill out this form.

    • That would have been a while ago, the rules have changed, unless that particular Kmart didn't get the memo
