Recommendations for a Big Everyday Backpack with Min 16" Laptop and Camera Compartments

Dear all, been following ozbargain for a while but this is my 1st post, hopefully it's at the right place.
I am looking for a multi functional backpack for my BF.
I believe his current backpack is http://targus.com/au/17_3-Voyager-Backpack-tsb045au
Not sure how long he had it for already but the main compartment zip is broken and he's been using it by sewing velcro to replace the main zip!
He's been using the bag this way since I know him abt 14mths ago and recently we went on an overseas trip together with his Nikon DSLR camera in the original box and in the bag! He also had a 2nd smaller canon camera with super zoom in another small camera bag which is also super annoying as it's not designed for that camera and I sometimes lose my temper trying to get it out!
I would like recommendations for a similar size bag to the current Targus he is using.
More important to have a laptop compartment since it's going to be his everyday bag, but he does usually carry the small canon camera everywhere. Will only carry the big Nikon for travelling trips.
Budget hopefully within A$100.
However if budget is not realistic, I am happy to pay a bit more.
Have found a few relevant models online but those on ebay within my budget are all from China and some reviews said they are mostly fakes.

Any relevant advises will be appreciated.
Any suggestions on physical store locations in Perth (or Adelaide) with wide variety of backpacks would be appreciated too.
Can wait, too late for valentine's gift but his birthday is end of May, so plenty of time :)
Thanks for reading!

  • Everki make good laptop backpacks. The ones you've listed are dedicated SLR bags, which won't be useful for everyday unless planning to carry SLR everywhere. Those bags tend to be padded quote a fair bit to protect lenses and is bulky. They are not practical as an everyday backpack. You may want to look at dedicated SLR shoulder bags + Laptop backpacks

  • I bought a Targus backpack for my 15.4inch laptop in 2008 approximately. It's similar to http://targus.com/au/Legend-IQ-Backpack-tsb705au. Has been basically bomb-proof, been on multiple overseas trips, used as a sportsbag, laptop and camera bag etc. $90 approximately at officeworks. It's used daily to and from work and the bag is still in great condition. Would definitely recommend.

  • Hi Moderators
Can you please help me to move this discussion thread to 'find me a bargain' instead? I think it might be more suitable over there as it's not getting much response here. Thanks to the above 2 who has replied though.

I have the Targus Voyager, the shoulder straps wear away clothing or skin, and the zippers break. I've made use of the limited warranty 4 times. I strongly suggest you inspect the shoulder strap to ensure they haven't got abrasive fabric, and ensure the zipper teeth are large, and the zipper tabs don't break. Just get anything that size you need, should be around $10, ensure it has a raincoat, otherwise you can buy them separately for $2.
