Cheapest Way to Top-up Opal Card?

What would be the cheapest way to top-up an Opal card? Anyone have any possible ideas?

My current idea:
Buy 5% off Woolies Gift Card from CashRewards/PricePal.
Use said Gift Card to top-up at a Woolies that does Opal top-ups (e.g. Town Hall)
Profit???

Well it only saves 5%, so for every 19 fares, get 1 free!

There is potential for 5% staff discount maybe, but obviously would need a Woolies staff to check it out.

There are no bargain killings for Opal top-ups, only small savings: e.g. gift card, ING rebate, petrol voucher. Maybe you can go for the bonus trips.

  • I did mass top-ups when Woolworths had those spend $X, get $Y off offers (with the previous Everyday Rewards system), and of course paid with discounted eGift cards. Since the introduction of Woolworths Rewards they don't seem to want to include top-ups as part of the offer.

Maybe you could still try your luck if you don't see "tickets" on the exclusion list of the next Woolworths Rewards spend $X, get $Y Woolworths Dollars back offer.

  • Fill-up few opal cards during Amex small business promotion.it works out to be half price(there is a surcharge at most places though)

  • You should have already stocked up loads of Wish Giftcards with 10% to even 30% off during Christmas promotion.

Use a kids green opal and keep a backup black adult opal if asked with random recent trips. Use that if asked and say it didn't tap on as the stupid thing was broken again. Easy 50% off.

Pretty sure excuses won't work with the ticket inspectors if you haven't tapped on… and you also need a concession card if you're travelling with the green Opal card.

      • Not for kids. You can buy them at any newsagent. Students are separate.

        • If you're an adult, you cannot the green child/youth card. It is only for children aged 4 to 15 and if you're a school student aged 16 and over you must carry a separate concession entitlement card. Ticket inspectors frequently check for concession entitlement cards and if you're misusing a child/youth card then you'll get fined.

Re-read the original post. You have a 2 Opal cards, not one, although you seem rather dense, so meh. You CAN buy green Opal cards off the shelf.

I hope you do realise that having a "backup" card with recent trips means nothing. The inspectors have devices that scan these cards and they're looking for where you last tapped on to get on the train or whatever mode. It's useless if your adult card says you tapped on a few days ago because it means you haven't tapped on for your current trip.

Buying green Opal cards also means nothing if you don't have the appropriate proof of eligibility if you are checked by police or inspectors. Yes, you can use the card at your own risk but if you're caught you have no excuse to get out of the fine.

I understood what you said from the beginning: using a green Opal card to make your journeys and providing the black Opal card to inspectors if they check your tickets; and if you do get checked, you're screwed in both scenarios:
          1. Showing your green card but having no proof of concession entitlement.
          2. Showing your black card but it hasn't been tapped on for your current journey.

        • @argusf: True. Whereas sometimes machines do not show taps, but inspector will know that the person has not tapped from last few days. Not a good idea and not worth it.
People skipping fairs are making fairs more expensive for normal people.
