I have been lurking for far too long and think that you guys'll give me the best advice on where to go from here.
I've been acting as a Sole Trader, sub-contracting to another company in a fashion that I understand is similar to an Uber driver only in the IT sector rather than transportation. This has been going on for roughly 1.5 Financial Years now for two different companies.
The last FY I ran through some guides and the help of the ATO to file my own tax return and paid slightly less in tax than I anticipated without claiming anything. I feel that since it's now I know this will be a permanent position I could have done much better / done things properly / claimed more expenses and need some help as to where to go from here in both managing my records, what to claim and what not to claim and how to manage my super contributions etc.
I am based in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne but happy to travel to the CBD for the right person / advice. I'm not too fussed on fees but this IS ozbargain.. :P

I can't help you in Melbourne, but I do know a Sydney accountant who is happy to consult over the phone / email - we did this for 2yrs (eventually we did meet in person, considering we're in the same city!) I've been with him for many years as a sole trader (transitioning to a company structure), and he's been the most genuine and thorough accountant I've worked with. The type that goes out of their way to help and explain things, and actually recommend ideas and strategies to you!
