Efficient and Effective Portable Air Conditioner?

Can anyone recommend a portable air conditioner that doesn't cost a fortune to run? I need to find one that is efficient and effective as possible to run as it is an essential item I cannot live without!

I just moved into a new rental property that unfortunately does not have air conditioning.

  • +1 here. i heard stay away from things with word "Evaporative" on it.

    • Definitely avoid Evaporative coolers if your are in a humid area (ie near the coast). Anything labelled as an Evaporative Air Conditioner is a marketing ploy only - it uses ice or iced water to cool the air it pumps, so actually increases the humidity…

      • Thanks for the tip, an increase in humidity would be horrid!

  • idk how efficient it is compared to other portable aircons but im using http://www.harveynorman.com.au/polocool-6-0kw-portable-air-c…

    Very good portable aircon.
i actually have two from old house.

    • doesn't cost a fortune to run?

This air cond does cost a fortune to buy. 6.0KW system also cost a lot of the electricity.

  • I'd personally try and figure out a way to get a small box one in a window or door. They are so much better than portables in my experience.

Window-mounted air-conditioning boxes are MUCH more effective, efficient and are even cheaper to buy than portables usually. If fact they can be regarded as full room air conditioners as opposed to 1 person air conditioners. They can be re-installed each summer and packed away again in autumn to allow full fresh air opening window the rest of the year.

Portables come with window kits to help with installation. However the exhaust hose is limited in length and flexibility, so these will only be useful if they are installed within about 1 horizontal metre of the window, and if the window is not too high, and is either a sliding or sash window. You will also need to empty the water tank which fills as it de-humidifies…

  • Be aware that even though you're looking at a "portable" air conditioner, you still need an outlet for the hot air.
This means the tube that will run from your machine. If you just run that tube out an open window (not sealed), it kind of completely defeats the purpose.

So there's likely still some level of install required if you want to achieve any "efficiency" or "effectiveness"

    • Thanks, that is something I hadn't thought about. I might just have to stick with a fan for the rest of this summer and consider moving once my year lease is up!
