Apple Warranty for Sealed iPhone 6s with No Proof of Purchase

Dear Ozbargainers,

Is it possible to activate the Apple warranty for a brand new 6s that has no proof of purchase? It's Australian stock, it's genuine and sealed, but comes from a private seller with no receipt. checkcoverage.apple.com/ shows only this for its serial number:

"Please activate your iPhone
We are unable to display coverage details because your iPhone has not been activated.
Please contact your iPhone retailer or wireless carrier to activate your iPhone."

So do I need a receipt or is inserting a sim card enough to start the apple warranty?

Will appreciate your hints.

  • I've never had Apple check proof-of-purchase (not saying they won't ever) for repairs or battery exchange. If I could unlock it and it was set up with an Apple ID I knew the password for, it wasn't a problem.

It would be a problem if you wanted a refund or exchange (I exchanged a gift iPad once, required receipt but not with my name on it).

    • Nah, I certainly want this one, won't be returning once purchased, but I'm not sure, however, if I can enable that Apple warranty by just unwrapping (it's unused and sealed), inserting my sim and going through all the initial screens on the phone. And whether they may ask for any invoice numbers or retailer details (which I don't know) at any stage of that process?

Is it normally done by simply switching on the phone for the fist time, inserting a sim and then tapping "Nexts" and the device has its warranty initiated then?

      • You don't need any of the purchase details to set up the phone. Pop in the SIM, go through all the screens (email, etc etc), and it'll register it to your iTunes/Apple account. That's all you need to activate it. That's all I've ever done. :)

        • I guess then, as long as in presence of the seller I open the box on the spot, insert sim and the registration is successful, it's all good (and the warranty is activated for my new phone)…

        • This guy!!
what he said… Iphones haven't been locked to a network since version 5

Pretty much, once you have gone through the setup system, takes up to 24 hours to register. From there you have a countdown timer of 365 days which is the apple one year limited warranty, then followed by consumer law for the next available years. Only time you ever need the proof of purchase is possibly getting "Apple care plus" which is pretty much 2 years of technical service and warranty for accessories, or find my iPhone issues with the device.

  • Every time I've had to claim on a warranty they just check the serial number on their system. However according to their warranty T&C's:
"Apple may need to examine your proof of purchase document to verify your iPhone's warranty status." See: http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/jo/service.html#warranty…

The warranty will start from the date of first activation. Go ahead and activate it and 10 sec later todays date, next year will show up as the warranty date.

  • The warranty will start from the date of first activation.

True, the seller allowed me to activate the phone with my sim (a wifi would do as well), no proof of purchase or app store account required. checkcoverage.apple.com instantly updated to all shown and ticked: Valid Purchase Date, Telephone Technical Support: Active, Repairs and Service Coverage: Active, with dates based on the day of the activation.

It looked like even if the phone was from overseas, the warranty would started as well. But that's only my guess.

Thank you all for the comments.
