Data and phone plans for the US

I am off to the USA in early March. I am not going as a tourist as I will be visiting family and friends for my 4 week stay. I will have my iPad Air and iPhone 5s with me. I will be able to access wi-fi in the places where I am staying so probably don't need a large data plan but I will need to use my mobile phone.

Can someone please help with info regarding a single phone and data plan for both devices? Is this called tethering? I have a plan here in Oz with Optus but am unsure of what I should be looking for in the US. I have purchased sim cards before through eBay for my iPhone.

  1. Do I need to purchase a US sim card for my iPad in order to use free wi-fi in the USA?

  2. Can I get away with only getting a sim card and phone plan for my iPhone

  3. I have done some checking at the ATT website but I just end up confused regarding what I need to get.

    I just returned from the US 6 week trip.
    check out simple mobile.

    $40US unlimited talk and text + 4gig data. can buy sim cards from wal-mart.

    uses tmobile network. worked fine for me in most places traveled to.

      We're also going for around six weeks, leaving mid Feb - did you by two months access then? (IE: How did you cover six weeks)

    its month to month. so after the first 4 weeks i had to buy another months credit.
    so didnt get to use it all. but was cheap enough so didnt bother me.

    3 tmobile 60 dollars, 10 gb and calls for month, google maps while walking is useful… i got 10 over 4 as data is used quickly using maps … whats twenty dollars… should be 3g, but alot are 2g i think so pretty slow.

    can use ipad through ur iphone by making it a hotspot…

        have fun, if ur gunna smash the fast food and soda brush ur teeth good…. 3 times i been and 3 times i needed solid dental work after getting back…drank too much dr pepper and mountain dew…

          Thanks for the advice, but I am afraid my vice in the US is, believe or not, Australian Wines. I can buy some of the more expensive brands cheaper there then they are here. Mind you with the Aust $ so low they might not be such a good price this time.

          Oh, And Mexican food. I cannot get enough of good Mexican food when I am in California!!!!

          Having said that there are also a few lollies that I do indulge in as well!!!!
