Why Are Cans Not Allowed in Stadiums ?

Today I noticed at MCG that they did not allow to take your own cans . Does anyone know why please ?

because they cant sell you canned beverages at expensive prices?

    • but do they allow plastic bottles?

      • next week it's no plastic bottles, but yes cans. Keeps you guessing.

    • Not sure why, but everyone is quick to judge negatively on laws and banns or changes. Few spend a minute to think of why this might happen and blame on commercial gains. Only shows mediocrity.

Damaged empty cans can be sharp.

  • Most if not every Australian stadium has a no cans policy. Some places even make you decanter bottles of water or softdrink (purchased at venue) into cardboard cups.

  • Sharp is the only one I can relate to being a legal reason unless someone else come up with something . Thanks guys .

can also be thrown at players, they would hurt.

Perhaps the thinking is that Metal (or metallic wiring or bomb of some sort) can be hidden inside the cans etc - no Xrays etc at entry points to see through so they cannot be sure? so easy way to be sure is block it altogether

or just easy to throw it like the previous poster mentioned. or make it a shiv

If they are not allowed then they should be called "can'ts"

And security should be reminding people "hey, no can'ts"

Nice work going to the G today, hope you appreciated kohli, marsh and maxwells efforts.

Full cans are like a brick - could cause serious injury to patrons or players

Empty cans can be fashioned into a weapon that can be used like a small blade

      Mod: removed foul language reference.

  • cans are metal and can be formed into a metal weapon

Hands are weapons and can be formed into hand weapons. Let's ban then too. While we were at it lets ban legs because they are leg weapons. Stop living in fear sunshine.

shhh you goober. You can't throw a hand at a player on the field.

      • +1

i think if you can remove your hands and legs the government would ban that too

  • because bogans throw full cans at players such as wally lewis youtube it

So ban the bogans not the inanimate item they choose to throw.
I realise that may be the end of stadium sports as stadiums would now be empty.

      • thats like saying ban terrorists off flights, and stop airport security… the world is the way it is because of douches….if we lived in an ideal world we woulndt need rbts…. on a side note anyone who ods on drugs should pay for the medical care they required….post the event through their wages

Um, they do try and ban terrorists off of flights and airport security is ineffective. Its just there to make gullible people feel better.

I get a small bottle opener on a key chain taken off of me and my wife loses her nail clippers (bear in mind that these items halve already traveled the globe in our possession) yet an actual hard nut could kill people with their little finger or probably slit my throat with a sheet of paper or scoop out my brains through my eye-sockets with a plastic spoon. (-:

  • Thanks everyone . Appreciate the comments.

Yeah the ban came in after people started throwing full cans during the Mexican wave (also banned) or at players for any number of reasons. This is why they pour the cans of beer & spirits into a cup and sell plastic bottles of softdrink. Whilst it wouldn't be nice to get hit with a full bottle of coke, it would have to be nicer than a can. They have cameras all over the ground and if you do throw anything, they will kick you out. Another warning if you plan to take in plastic bottles, they must be sealed/unopened. People in the past have tried to mix in alcohol which is obviously a no-go; this however can be worked around if you use a hair dryer and heat the cap enough to pop it off and back on without breaking the seal :D.

    • You can also buy the bottle caps with the ring still attached at homebrew shops or at BigW.

    • use #78 for a hair dryer - note to self

Why would they ban the Mexican wave though? Good crowd spirit is important.

      • For this exact projectile reason, idiots use it as an opportunity to throw items when they go up with less risk of being caught, drinks and food etc and people were complaining when a full beer lands on their head. So 99.99% of people are not an issue, it is just the small minority ruining it for the rest. Obviously you wont be kicked out for doing it, but you can be kicked out for being the person that starts it. If you notice the members section rarely participates in the wave which gets the customary "booo" when it goes past because they are told they can get their membership cancelled if they participate.

    • In asian country they use a syringe to suck out from new alcohol bottle and pump back in water and resell it

  • Its either ban bogans or ban cans. Guess it's easier to ban cans

sucks, im a full fletched bogan, and prefer drinking from cans…

My apologies, please dont throw a can at me, I didnt mean to offend :)

thats ok, id never waste a can anyway…. cans are much better…. i own 5 bintan singlets, i wear one a day to work

  • I've been to the MCG at Melbourne Victory's game (soccer).

A can (of Jack if I remember correctly) was thrown from the 2'nd floor (lawn). A 14'year old or so female was unfortunate enough to take the hit. She ended up in comma. Also same person or one near him hit a 500ml bottle in the same crowd where I was standing. It didn't hit me but a male was knocked down.

They can't ban plastic bottles, because banning people from bringing in their water bottles is ridiculous.

Metal cans on the other hand can be used as a projectile and they hurt. No one fills their water up in a can or sells cans of water, so there's no reason why they can't ban it.

  • Have been to a few soccer games at hunter stadium. After the Asia cup they told us we couldn't bring in full drink bottles, only prepurchased sealed water bottles. People were emptying water on the ground at the entry so they didn't have to throw away their bottles. Fortunately the security guy took pity on us and said don't being it in next time. Depends on which security you get wether you can bring them in or not. We haven't had a drama since that first time in many visits.

Friends have been told to empty their bottles, and on one occasion were told they couldn't bring in a bag of chips and had to chuck them in a bin. On one occasion after some people were told not to bring in water bottles there was a vendor selling cans inside the grounds! Strangely it doesnt seem to be too hard to bring in flares though.

If they prevent you from bringing in full bottles they should be made to provide water filling points so you can fill them up. They do provide water at the bars under the RSA rules, but you get a thimble sized cup out of a 5l water cooler that is set to serve thousands of people.
