wiki
Aphantasia is a hypothesized neurological condition [1] where a person does not possess a functioning mind's eye. The term was first suggested in a 2015 study for a specific kind of visual agnosia.[2] Further studies are being planned.[3] The term was coined by the team led by Prof. Adam Zeman of the University of Exeter Medical School.

    • Please explain your logic.

This does to appear to be advertising/scamming or processed meat.

He's asking if people with this condition can picture spam in their minds eye.

  • interesting.

Had to to read a bit to find out what you meant by mind's eye. but basically its the ability to visualise things with your eyes closes.

Not sure if this is related but I always find it hard to visualise scenes from books that I read.

OP so do you have this condition?

    • I'm the same, I begin to play the scene of a book out in my head, without even realising. That's how you know you're onto a good book.

  • Very interesting. Thanks for posting.

  • As you see sceptics like rogr could not be bothered clicking on a BBC link, before coming to a false conclusion.
Altomic, yes that would work, I know what a spam can is and can grab one in the super, but no minds eye of one.
Gimili no,visualise a scene from a book is different,
And yes I do have it.
    Bluesky thanks for your interest.
It is really hard to describe to a person that doesn't have it, no minds eye of Parents, Wife. But could find them in a Supermarket.

    • could not be bothered clicking on a BBC link

Maybe if you provided something that wasn't an internet news site you would be taken seriously? News on the internet is usually made up by someone, embellished by someone else and then printed with zero fact checking and the only thing that matters is traffic and nothing else so the only thing that gets published is alarmist rubbish that has no bearing on reality. And no the BBC is not different.

  • Diji thanks for the reply, I put the BBC there to show it wasn't spam
Only the first post didn't believe me
I put AMA ask me anything because I have it .
The Aphantasia forum isn't a internet news site.

I Appoligize to everyone that I can't make myself clear, my wife still doesn't get even though she has read a number of reports.
    Thanks again everyone.

Here is the wiki link if you really want to be disappointed that's almost the total page,

  • Ok I was not planning on doing a AMA, I will take a hint from Brokenenglish that my write up sucks.
Maybe someone who is struggling or there kid may have Aphantasia and not know it, so I will move on and hope this still helped someone.

Thanks Brokenenglish , maybe I should choose Morebrokenenglish .

This is the most unorganised "AMA" that I've ever come across.
Might be my comprehension skill but your description makes me want to go away :(
You just put random piece of information here and there, I think you need to fix the structure…
    See: https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/

  • i see boobies

  • The only objective way of telling would be observe if the subject can have nightmares/dreams. Someone with the so called 'no mind eye' would sleep peacefully. But if they have difficulty sleeping then their mind is wandering into thoughts.

  • Thanks Skimpywallet,
This is where the problem is nonAphanasia don't get it. ( or my poor explanation)
I can dream and have nightmares, images come to mind day and night, "but controlled images don't", like I want to imagine a red apple now it doesnt happen. There is no picture reference just data which allows me to recognise a red apple in the supermarket.
If I say close your eyes, and add this up 256x 2 = ( I can add it up but not see any numbers)
If I say look at your wife, now close your eyes can you keep an image? (I can't even for a tenth of a second)

Thanks again I find this impossible to explain, can someone explain it better? Thanks.

    • Thats pretty much it, but why would you want to identify by something you are not (ie not able to bring up a mental picture)? You are different - celebrate! When did not having a mental picture adversely affect you? For me its a blessing, when everyone dry retches at a mental image, I am immune!

Everything is a form of autism these days, if it doesn't need fixing it ain't broken. I have lived a lifetime not knowing having no mental pictures was rare, and coped quite fine. I do have ideas and am creative, I like to create, because I can't see it in my mind, I like art too. I don't need a "special snowflake" status and I can't see why diagnoises is necessary when medication is not necessary. Individuality used to be celebrated, now it is diagnosed.
