  • Always +ve for a freebie! :)

  • I've actually heard about stevia before but never used it. I thought it was an American thing we couldn't get here. It's meant to be a natural alternative to all the chemical sweeteners that do who knows what to your body and organs. So hopefully it tastes nice and is a viable alternative to sugar, because I'd give this a go, provided it's easy to find.

    • Stevia extracts have been suspected to cause cancer. Whereas aspartame has been conclusively proven to be safe for human consumption in recent papers.

I'd rather aspartame than stevia any day.

That said, I'd rather sugar over aspartame any day.

      • Oooh, I thought it was the other way around. Always figured that it is my Coke Zero addiction (which is phenylalanine) is the stuff of pure evil. I don't consume much pure sugar, mainly just a sprinkling on cereal and in cooking here and there.

I really should do more research on this, we consume so much of this stuff and really don't know what it is and what it does. :/ Are all these cancer references valid or is it just to scare us?

        • To be honest, both stevia and aspartame (also called phenylalanine) have been accused of being carcinogenic…

But upon further medical research, both have been concluded as safe. The FDA and their equivalent in Aus are quite stringent regarding foods safety. But old beliefs are hard to die off especially in controversial topics like carcinogenicity.

If you gave me a cup sweetened with any of the three ingredients, i'd say, thanks for the tea!

          • @kimmik: Yes, it seems anything that causes or fends off cancer is a hot topic. On The 7pm Project this evening they had a story about how eating apricot kernels and papaya daily can ward off cancer. Whoever can cure cancer one day will be richer than Bill Gates!

      • you can't be serious, Stevia is a HERB.

Look up aspartame on Google, it has been scientifically proven to cause tumors in rats, causes cancer and lupus.

        Aspartame is poison.

Better yet look it up on youtube, some great info there, and make your own decisions after seeing the facts.

        • look up dihydrogen monoxide. an even bigger poison for the happyantix to crusade against. i love how you say "scientifically proven" as if you had a phd in chemistry. that line means nothing if you dont understand the science to back it up.

you'll find my posts on the topic here. i'm tired of reiterating myself to every time this topic comes up:

Just because Stevia is a herb extract doesn't mean it is safe, there are plenty of herbs and plants that are poisonous or can cause bad reactions.

I am not saying Stevia is bad, but people have to stop associating something that is natural or organic or herb directly to healthy and safe or better.
