Qantas Points - Not Sure What to Use Them on

Hi all,

I am after some recommendations on how/what to use my qantas points on. After 5 years with a home loan credit card and signing up for a few new ozbargain credit card deals my wife and I have accrued approx 300,000 points. We have just let them sit there and accrue until now.

From my research Ive worked out theres 3 possibilites -

  1. Use them on flights - I cant see us doing much travel at all in the near future as we might be starting a family soon. Whenever we have flown in the past we just get the cheapest economy flight at the time eg air asia, virgin, air NZ. We are not interested in using them on upgrades

  2. Grocery gift cards - cost approx 17,000 for $100 card. At the moment I calculate approx $1800 worth of gift cards we could cash in.

  3. Sell the points - I have only just read about this. From what I have read 1c per point is the going rate? So from this I calculate approx $3000 I could sell them for. I have also read you are only supposed to transfer to family members - does qantas check? what happens if they find out its not a family member? does anyone know of anyone who has been caught? What is the best way to sell to protect yourself as the seller?

Does anyone see any better way to use these points?

I also have another question, do points devalue over time? eg would a woolworths card cost 20,000 points in the future?

Thanks

    1. use the points for business class, may be to USA.

    2. Sell it for $3000 easy peasy. Most people are doing this. no need to panic.

    • Hows the best way to find a buyer? Through ozbargain? Whats the best way to protect myself as the buyer?

      • Find someone in the same city as you, meet up, they give you the folding stuff while you do the transfer online.

        • Ok I am from a regional area so it may be hard for me to find a buyer, unless I wait until I make a trip to the city and organise a meetup then. Otherwise online only

          @fatlikeyamum:

Do you realise that selling the points is against the terms and conditions?

If you are going to transfer points around between accounts the maximum family member transfer is 100,000 points per quarter.

        • @pointscrazy: incorrect. 100k per transfer. 4 times a year!!!

        • @bbqwer:

I double checked one of the Qantas pages and found the 4 times a year reference. I have also heard QFF members say that you have to wait 3 months between the transfers. My suggestion is to read the terms and conditions in detail if you are ever going to try such a thing.

The points definitely devalue over time when it comes to Gift cards and purchases in the Qantas store.

I'm not sure whether they devalue in terms of reward flights but I'm guessing this is possible. I recently saw Qantas reduce their points requirements for a couple of specific fligths but I am guessing this is a rarity.

If you decide to use your points for flights, remember there will be fees and charges which you have to pay by another payment method.

I use Qantas points for gift cards but check carefully each time as to which cards offer the best redemption rate. I know other members can get better redemptions than me but this is the best use for me personally as I'm not interested in travel at the moment and want the benefit from the points now.

If you are travelling, look into whether you can use the points for accomodation and hire car costs.

Get that last memorable holiday in before the baby arrives. Your world will come to a halt for the next 10 or so years minimum.

I'm a big fan of family life, but this is good advice. Burn the points in a fiery glory of fun times if you can. There is nothing more important than the relationship you hope to have with your wife for the next 60 years. Show her even with all the massive family hurdles on your horizon you still want to give her a beautiful time away.I didn't follow this, and am paying for it. It is truly your one time to splurge, to really impress her. Do it, but tell her later you did it because you knew you had to and you and her are we, and we all are full of love.

      • Ill take the advice on board but at least we have been fortunate to have been overseas nearly every year for the past 5 years. If we hadnt been it would be a no brainer to use it on a big trip

    • Can see where you are coming from but the airfare is not the most expensive part of a holiday. I would personally take all the money you were intending to go on the holiday and get rid of the credit card bills or pay a chunk out of the mortgage. Kids just burn through money at the same time as you are, probably, giving up a second income for the next year or two. The other half and I don't have kids but we didn't travel much until we had paid a substantial part of our mortgage off.

  • I'd also take a look at the qantas store for physical goods. Most of the time it's overpriced stuff, no ozbargainer would admit buying. Occasionally they have a special.

Book a return first class trip to Auckland on Emirates.

  • I am looking for Business class redemptions one way Singapore to Sydney, or Bangkok to Sydney. God it is frustrating. If I can find one then they are sending me inndirectly either via Melbourne or Hong Kong, and then charging me additional miles for the inconvenience. Also, can you redeem Qantas FF miles for a ticket for another person if you are not accompanying them ?

    • For anyone interested, Johhnyeyebrows reports that can redeem QFF for other persons.

  • For 280K QF points 2 of you could fly around the world in Y (Economy).
