AirAsia new baggage pricing

"We would like to inform you, our valued guest, that we will be revising our baggage pricing.
With the new pricing structure, booking your checked baggage at the time of your flight booking will guarantee you the greatest savings.
You will still be able to pre-book your baggage via Manage My Booking later. However, it will be at a higher price."

Before you could book and pay for your baggage a short time before your flight, and that way minimise your risk/losses if you cancelled your flight.
Their link for 'Learn more about our new baggage pricing structure here' does not work. Perhaps they have made the announcement before they have worked out the detail.

  • yep, ruins our previous method of booking just the flight, then adding seats/bags/food later.
wonder what the price difference is?

  • Yeah. I tried to go and see if the price difference is huge or not, but it is not linking to the info.

  • Went in to my bookings and no difference as yet that I can see. Will do a dummy booking and see if it different
Update …Did a dummy booking Perth to Bali and no change still $22 for 20kg $25 for 25kg

  • They have been known to back down on decisions. Such as their unpopular and unworkable decision to charge people extra if they did not do online check in !! And so it is worth complaining about. Even on their facebook page which they actually do read.

    • nah, I think this time they'll keep the change, Jetstar has been doing this for ages and no one bats an eyelid, they even go as far as not allowing you to add any baggage if you choose the most basic fare sometimes ago.

    • Starts 28th Jan

We encourage our guests who have purchased flights to pre-book preferred checked baggage via Manage My Booking before 28th January 2016.

Merged from AirAsiaX price increase in baggage add-ons

For flights with AirAsiaX, I tend not to pay for extras such as baggage at time of booking, simply because I normally book flights well in advance and you can always add the luggage at a later stage (closer to the date of departure). Previously, it also meant that in case of an upgrade to a flat bed via Optiontown, you would still get your standard business class luggage allocation at no cost (but this has changed, if you don't pay for luggage and get upgraded and have bags to check in, you end up paying the hefty airport rates). Yesterday, I got the below email:

We would like to inform you, our valued guest, that we will be revising our baggage pricing.

With the new pricing structure, booking your checked baggage at the time of your flight booking will guarantee you the greatest savings.

You will still be able to pre-book your baggage via Manage My Booking later. However, it will be at a higher price.

Rest assured that pre-booking checked baggage online, be it at the time of your flight booking or later via Manage My Booking, you will still enjoy more savings as compared to purchasing last minute at the airport counter. Because of this, we highly encourage you to pre-book your baggage.

Learn more about our new baggage pricing structure here.

Looks like an overall 15% increase in rates if you add your luggage online at a later stage:
    SYD-KUL
At time of booking: $39 for 20kg
via Manage My Booking: $45 for 20kg

New pricing will come into effect 28 January so if you have any pending bookings with AirAsiaX you can still lock in the old rates.

The link in the email seems to be working today (Saturday). I wasn't able to see the rates yesterday when I got the email.

  • Next thing will be that you get seat purchase/selection cheaper if done at the time of booking :((
