Best Way to Convert a $3,000 JB Hi-Fi Voucher to Cash

Hi

I have a $3k voucher for JB Hifi as a result of an insurance claim. It has a barcode and doesn't need to all be used at once.

I'm looking for advice as to the best way to convert this into cash. I need $1800 (cash) for a private purchase of something unrelated, so I don't mind 'keeping' part of the voucher.

A couple of ideas I had were:

  • buy MacBook(s) or iPhone(s) and sell BNIB for 15% off the RRP
  • offer the whole voucher for sale

I've been hoping to hear (or see on Facebook) from someone I know that they're buying a new phone or laptop (or even a high-end TV) and offer to make a deal, but it hasn't happened so far. If anyone in here is from Perth and is already planning a purchase from JB and wants to make a deal, let me know.

What do people think is a fair total to expect from converting a $3000 voucher, and also if you were planning on purchasing, for example, an iPhone 6s+ 128gb (RRP $1529), what price would you expect to pay (in cash) if I said I'd meet you in the store and buy the phone using the voucher?

Cheers

i'd expect to lose at least 20% of the value in onselling the voucher or goods

I would think you would have no issue selling it for around $2500.

Yeah looks like 15-20% discount is expected :)

Be careful with Gumtree etc, after all you are handing over a plastic card worth $3k, even meeting up etc make sure there's more of you than there is of them!

    • And check to make sure the cash is legit. Plenty of fake 50s and 100s in circulation.

Really? How do you know that if you are not printing them?

        • +2

Because it's on the news every week.

    • Yeah cheers, this is one of the reasons I'm reluctant to just say '$3000 voucher for sale', especially somewhere like Gumtree.

  • I'm very interested! PM me as im unable to PM you.

    • Have PM-ed you. Cheers.

  • I'd just find a friend who is buying a massive tv soon.

If you are planning to sell the Macbook/iPhone, why not advertise it first, and if you get a buyer, then you go and get it from jbhifi? Helps with the depreciation in case you can't sell it.

One of the best ideas. Could even organise going together which helps remove any more decline in value. You'll basically be selling a brand new device and the person will be there and get the original invoice.

and explain that in your advert - and offer the item at 90%(?) retail price.

10% off + new that day so warranty starts from that date. plus they know exactly where it came from, etc etc

        • Or I could just go to JB and buy one for 10% off myself with better consumer protection (not iPhone though).

Plenty of sales at 20% to 40% off. I doubt anyone will bite at 10% off.

    • Great idea, cheers.

  • Also, I know this is probably not nice, but I recently bought a vacuum cleaner from The Good Guys using gift cards, but it was faulty and they had no stock, so they gave me a refund to my credit card instead. Not sure what the refund policy is at JB.

ill give you 2000 cash money

If you are giving out money, I'll have some too. Thanks

  • The voucher was provided to you to replace lost, stolen or damaged goods. Perhaps you should do that. May be time to change insurance companies. Which one issued that voucher so we all know to stay away from them? I use GIO and they always send me a cheque or credit my bank account :)

    • It was no doubt a warranty claim through JBs extended warranty. I've had that they issue you the money in a voucher to go buy another TV

    • "Always send me a cheque or credit my bank account"

How many insurance claims have you done? This statement would indicate quite a few which I would consider unusual.

BTW I can confirm that GIO do issue JBHifi store credit vouchers.
