  • Check Ts&Cs - last I checked TID do not cover loss caused by cancellation by your airline.

    • I used them back in November and i read over my policy and they did cover it.. unless they've changed it recently.

      • There is a general exclusion "Delays, rescheduling or cancellation of scheduled transport services caused by the
carrier or related to the carrier, including maintenance, repairs, rescheduling, service faults or industrial activity other than a strike or corporate takeover" to be aware of, you only have cover in this scenario up to $2000 for a single policy if you take out the additional International or Annual Multi Trip plan. Refer section 6 of the PDS.

        • I thought if its caused by the airline then the airline has to cover it? Could be wrong

        • @frogduck: Nope. A 'rescheduled' flight where you lose your accomodation won't be covered by the airline. And if the reschedule is not a time useful to you it can be a pain to even get a refund from the airline. Better to get proper insurance.

    • Yep my mum and uncle got refused a claim, their plane was cancelled due to "technical difficulties" causing them to miss a connecting flight, car hire, hotel etc and now out of pocket $3000 Who defines technical difficulties ? it seems they ring the airline and the airline tells them "technical difficulties " and that's it .

  • 10% off Travel Insurance Direct (TID)

Does that work out cheaper than other Travel Insurance premiums ?

I shopped around back in november, and i found these guys were the cheapest around - without going to a low quality dodgy looking site.. but yeah.

      • without going to a low quality dodgy looking site

MSY have a "low quality dodgy looking site", but people still shop there…

        • That may be true - but in my experience and preference i'd prefer to go with one that looks nicer and more professional.

        • @Catalystic:

i'd prefer to go with one that looks nicer and more professional.

So you'd prefer to buy from Dick Smith than MSY ?

        • @jv:

Never shopped at Dick smith :p

        • @jv: What's the product? What's the RRP?

        • +1

          @slinkster:

          What's the RRP?

You should ignore that RRP because that's often not the normal price the product is sold for…

        • @jv:

Dick Smith's website looks nice and professional to you?

        • @Grillman:

Dick Smith's website looks nice and professional to you?

          relative to MSY, yes…

        • @jv: I brought insurance from them yesterday, It was indeed 10% more than it is today.

  • LOL do these guys ever not have the 10% discount? It's always there. Loads of other incentives through other websites as well. Best to research the PDS properly.

  • TIDTHANKS is a permanent discount for TID. It gives you $10 off, so if your policy costs less than $100 this is a better deal. You will get this coupon in a welcome home e-mail every time you return from a trip covered by them.

    • Actually, no longer $10 off. they decreased to 5% off.

  • If you book your ticket through your credit card, it should have automatic travel insurance. I recently went on a trip overseas my brother had an accident that could be described as critical. The travel insurer spend close to what we concluded as 110k AUD to cover his medical costs and eventually fly him back to Australia.

Have a read through who your credit card uses as their travel insurer and read their policy.

    • Not all credit cards have Travel Insurance included, so people need to clarify this first.

    These guys suck.

My mum had a stroke in Dunedin NZ, and it took them more than 3 weeks to get her back home to Australia. They were constantly trying to cut costs, to the point of endangering my mother's health (e.g. instead of providing an air ambulance from Dunedin, they suggested an ambulance to Auckland - a 20 hour drive including ferry! - so that they could fly her back on a cheaper commercial airliner). I understand that the primary goal of an insurance company is to make money, but Travel Insurance Direct took that one step further.

  • I just got a quote from TID 12 days in Japan inc snow cover $130 ($100 excess) but went with https://www.onlinetravelinsurance.com.au $57 ($150 excess)

    • Would you know or have any previous experience with onlinetravelinsurance? How good are they?

      Thanks!

      • No sorry, I haven't got the policy at hand but it is one of the well known insurance companies on the letterhead, can't remember who though

  • Could anyone suggest a better company for travel to the USA?

    • +1

I'm not sure - i've got to say i've only ever bought travel insurance and it was once through these guys - went to LA in November for 2 weeks.

    • +1

Of course there's bad stories from every company but I'd recommend these guys having successfully claimed more than once through them. Their $ limits are high, don't get some other company that's cheap with not enough coverage.

      • Totally agree. They also have live chat which helped enormously whilst we were stuck in Bali due to the ash cloud. They paid us over $8k for that incident.
