Moving a Double Mattress - need recommendations

Sorry if i am posting in the wrong forum but i am looking to move a double mattress from the blue mountains to sydney (approx 130km). I was thinking of hiring a van so that i can move other stuff as well (but they are small if needed i can move them with my own car on separate occasions). the only problem is i am unable to hire a one way van from blue mountains so possibly looking at hiring a van from sydney, drive it up and back. The other problem is most van rentals come with a limit of 100km per day and extra milage is generally charged 25-35 cents per km and since i really only need to move the bed, i was thinking perhaps a 4wd or suv instead. Just wondering if anyone has moved one before and if it will fit with the passenger seats down? the mattress is fairly rigid, if may be able to squeeze in a bit but definitely not as flexible as spring ones.

i've looked into airtasker but offers i've been getting were exp at roughly 200 dollars. I'm only willing to pay 125 max

long story short: what car can i use to move a double bed?

Many thanks.

Hire a trailer from Bunnings? But this will only work if you already have access to a vehicle with a towbar.

    • unfortunately don't have a towbar :( thanks though

  • Roof racks?:)

    • is it legal to strap a mattress on? lol i'll be on the m4 and the amount of cops that are there, probably will get stopped

      • Nowhere said that it is illegal:) Common sense says that as soon as it doesn't obstruct the view, fit into your vehicle's footprint and reliably secured you are fine.

Google "mattress car roof" for some inspiration;)

        • If you are going to go down this route strap it properly … then strap it more.

Matresses have a way of catching the wind and then flying off of your car like a kite.

        • @mattyman: yep, 10 buck straps at master posted yesterday is not much more then rope

Just stick it on the roof of your car and you and passenger hold it while driving to Sydney. The fine by police will be a few hundred dollars but seems you have no other option

lollll i might as well throw it away then :(

      • And I have a vision of a mattress being blown off the roof into the windscreen of a passing vehicle … not nice!

Mattress or bed? You've used both terms…

For the sake of $200… Sell the mattress, or just buy a new one. Sounds like way too much hassle for something that likely needs replacing anyway!

    • sorry my bad, bed. Yea seriously contemplating that but the bed costed a bit a fairly new so trying to keep it if i can but worse comes to worst, to the salvos.

      • Why not sell it locally? Costs nothing to list it on eBay for pickup.

      • I don't think charities take mattresses, so factor in disposal cost instead.

  • Perhaps ring around a few removalists stating only one mattress to be moved. They may be able to include it with a move for another person, perhaps on a different day that you require. You never know you may get one interested to do this for you (backloading perhaps). Doesn't hurt to try though. Perhaps you could contact the Salvos, Vinnies etc. and offer to make a donation for the move. Good luck!

    • thanks for that, worth a shot

  • Do you have any mates with a ute or station wagon? I've been able to fit heaps of stuff in my Peugeot 307 wagon which has flat folding seats.

    • nope, my mates all have normal sedan. i can hire a 8 seater (hyundai imax) for approx 100, then plus petrol etc probably about the price i'm willing to pay, perhaps i'll go with that, it should fit the bed with all the seats down yea?

Seats don't go down on the Imax, Grand Carnival yes, Imax no

        • oh wow thanks for that, i didn't think of that at all

      • Get a tape measure haha. You should be able to get the specs for the boot of the car online, and then just measure your mattress.

You can hire a ute from Bunnings for $65 for the day, if you hire for the whole day it comes with unlimited kilometres. You have to leave a $200 deposit which you get back when you return the ute. We did this to move my son back home, including his queen size bed and mattress, worked well. You can also buy plastic bags from Bunnings to cover you whole mattress or base, they are $4 each. Not sure if Valley Heights has ute hire given it is a smaller store, but one of the two Penrith stores should. We just left our car in the Bunnings car park for the day.

    • thanks for that, that sounds like a plan. did you just lay the mattress flat? sorry i'm thinking about the ute with like the open box kinda thing at the back

Yes, lay the mattress flat on the bed of the ute. You are right it was a ute with sides about 30cms with a back that dropped down. We secured everything with rope and occy straps.
