  • What do people think of this? I've been tossing up changing to 3 for a while, cos I have a lot of family and friends on it. I reckon this seals the deal for me.

    • The SIM only plans don't look all that great unless you're going to VoIP with your mobile or need a heap of data since you only get free calls to either Voda or 3, not both…

Regional coverage is still the worst of the lot, but if that matters little (or not at all) to you, then 3 and Voda have always been the cheapest.
(Although if you can grab a handset from 3 with MegaG capability, then you get equivalent coverage to Optus.)
I'm with Virgin (Optus network) which is also worth checking out. These plans look very similar to Virgin's. On my $29 Cap I get 20Mb free, which is all I need.
The Optus regional coverage where I travel (mid-north SA) is pretty decent.

Given you have plenty of friends on 3 and Voda, going on a plan is a no brainer if regional coverage isn't an issue. You could well slip down a plan level or 2 by utilising all the free calls.

    • The big problem with 3 is data roaming. You don't just need to be in the country to roam on data either, just a metro area (eg in a building with spotty 3 coverage). This is easily the biggest issue with '3' at present.

Given that they both have identical pricing, it makes much more sense to go with vodafone.

      • I live in the Adelaide Hills, and chose to go with 3 because there is no Vodafone reception at my house, and its dismal all around the Adelaide Hills, and there is no Virgin/Optus at work, but there is Telstra NextG in both places. With my data hungry iPhone its cheaper to go with 3 and pay the extra data usage (about $15 a month extra for me) than to go on a Telstra plan.

Also with 3 you can now go onto the Vodafone GSM network (Called 3 2G from a 3 phone) in metropolitan areas, which includes data usage.

  • This certainly brings back memory. 2003 - 2004 3-3 is unlimited 10 minutes block. I got free phone (crap one) becoz 3 back of their offer coz people only making free call (no min spend before on hot for 3)

Well.. For those who is on 69 cap. this is worse off for them. It gives a good data allowance (in restricted 3 network - watch for the roaming charges) but the call allowance was $650 + $350 (3 to 3) before now it just $450 + unlimited (3 to 3) + 250 Mb. Beware call charges is increased from 80cent/min (30 sec block) to 90cent/min (60 sec block !!! WTF??) so once u pass that caps, u will mortgage ur house!

For 29 and 49, it is a good deal (free untimed 3 to 3 and no block limit) 49 got 50 Mb (suitable for casual data) but the call rate is very uncompetitive!!

Another thing is, range of mobile phone offered is getting less and less interesting and new one is more expensive than other carrier.

I have no clue about Vodafone at the moment.

    • where did you find the revised call charges for 3? I cant seem to locate it anywhere!

I agree the 60 sec block is a little excessive!

  • But i don't see this plan anywhere in 3 website. I'm currently on their $49 plan. Wonder if i'll get the unlimited free 3-to-3 as well once that plan is effective.

    • +2

Yeh let me just state how much I despise the mobile phone industry's concept of "Mobile phone caps"
90cents per minute is insane, but it serves two purposes:
      1. It makes the plan seem awesome value ("includes $550 of value!")
      2. It makes the excess charges insane when you exceed your included calls.

Also if you intend on using most/all of your cap — you had better watch your call credit like a hawk. If you feel uncomfortable paying for something you might not use, caps are absolutely not for you.

    • Don't forget, Virgin also charge per minute.

  • $35 – Unlimited 3 to 3 calls; $350 included value, 250MB internet

pretty decent for those wanting an alternative to pre-paid with an iphone

  • These plans are quite decent, particularly for those who have many friends on those specific networks.

But, as has already been mentioned, it does seem quite similar to Virgin.

Per minute billing is disgusting. But a lot of companies are doing that now. First it was Virgin, now Voda and 3 are following in Virgin's 'per minute block' footsteps.

  • For Vodafone & 3… their cap doesn't include international?

  • per minute billing?! WTF! does anyone know if these plans are gonna totally replace the current ones or will we be able to choose either?
