  • hmm, what to get, this one or TP link D9…

    • I haven't read those threads, but I've purchased from greenbox on more than a few occasions and never had an issue. Just my 2c.
      YMMV.

      • I made the mistake of buying some genuine HP toner which showed in stock. A few weeks later they had still not arrived. Emailed to follow up. Found out they were not in stock at time of order, and no ETA.
Asked for refund… took a couple of months after order placed, to receive refund.

Also had credit card fraud issue around the same time, however cant be sure if it was just before or after that purchase. It didnt even cross my mind it it could be related to this store until later when I read the whirlpool thread about multiple people having their credit cards compromised soon after buying from this store. I should have used PayPal (and bought elsewhere!).

I am sure some people (and possibly more likely locals) must have success buying from them - otherwise they would not still be in business - but the sheer volume of negative experiences, including reports of serious issues like credit card compromise, has put me off ever buying from them again.

Every store has customers with good and bad experiences so no 1 or small number of users/experiences can be taken as a rule. But when there is a pattern…

  • OK, thanks for that systmworks
how do I delete my submission?

  • +1

I bought one of these to replace my old Billion 7800N which I thought had started to give up the ghost. Turned out to be something else, so the Billion is still working.

I used the Asus for 5 or 6 weeks before trying the Billion again - I'm now using the Billion for it's modem and router and just using the Asus for wi-fi (it's got much better range).

The firmware on the Asus is leaps and bounds better than the 7800N - BUT, on my line the 7800N can sync at least 2000kbs faster (I'm on an iinet dslam and I'm around 3.5Km from the exchange).

Apparently it's something to do with the chipset used in the modem. If was buying again I'd go for the TP Link as it has a similar chipset to the Billion. (I should have done even more research than I did before purchase).

  • The shipping button works for me and it's $28.80 to Adelaide.

  • n00b question regarding WiFi extenders:

My house (in construction) will have a data port upstairs. I am considering connecting a wifi range extender up there, if I find the wireless range isn't good enough once moving in (router will be in garage, concerned whether it will perform well upstairs on other-side of house).

When using a range extender, does a the network still appear as a single wifi network on your device, and does the phone automatically switch to the strongest signal (like it would with access points at an office or university), or will it appear as two wifi networks?

Also, can you use any extender with any router, or would they need to be same manufacturer to be configured properly (eg. if I get the Netgear R7000, do I need to buy a compatible Netgear range extender?). Do most extenders allow you to extend the connection via ethernet, or does it only pickup and relay the wifi signal?

    Cheers

    • I'm not answering your questions, because there is a bigger underlying issue.
By the sounds of your statement:

router will be in garage, concerned whether it will perform well upstairs on other-side of house

I can pretty confidently tell you it won't perform well at all.

A range extender will help, but by the sounds of it (I'm making assumptions on the size of your house based on your statement above), even that will be crap. Range extenders are a bad compromise.

Spend $1000 now and get your house cabled and terminated with min cat6. Even if it's just to key locations that you might want it… Study, TV points, audio system, etc.
If you don't, I can almost guarantee you'll regret it later.

      • Hey,

There will be a data port in the study and the upstairs entertainment room.

I believe these data points start near the NBN box, which will be in the garage, hence why the router would be there (I also will have a PC in the garage, which would be connected to the router via ethernet.

So it would go NBN box - router - cabling in wall which connects to study and upstairs.

Netgear ex6200 from wall to extender upstairs, and this device has additional ports, which I'd use to connect things like ps4 etc.

If you have other recommendations, I could definitely notify electrical as building hasn't commenced yet.

  • I own one and its a good modem but getting a pci card that uses the speed is tricky .
I got the pci-68 and there are no windows 10 drivers that run full speed 300mb max, best I have on pci is 450mb and that is with tplink card $38.

Seems we can get fast modems and routers but devices that run at those speeds are scarcer.
