Hi Guys,
This is a straight copy and post from another forum where I started this thread. I recently sought some advice regarding Intel NUC's on another forum but haven't received any feedback.
Hi,
I hope this is the correct sub.
I am looking at purchasing an intel NUC for HTPC which will be used for transcoding plex [media files stored on NAS] as well as maybe netflix, rtorrent [with a max of 5 active linux distros seeding at a time], as well as anything else that can be of some fun :D
I am deciding between
5th gen i3
4th gen i5
5th gen i5
My conundrum
The 5th gen i3 is only 2.1ghz CPU but the gpu seems to be better (Intel HD 5500) than the 4th gen i5

The 4th Gen i5 has a better CPU – 1.9ghz to 2.7ghz, but the GPU is only an Intel HD 5000.
It also doesn't have an IR port so will need a FLIRC USB

Alternatively I could just fork out a bit extra and get the 5th gen i5 unit, which should last me for years to come?

I think anything above 8GB RAM will be overkill to run my OS and programs in the background(maybe even above 4GB?)
I will also need to get an SSD either from
https://www.umart.com.au/umart1/pro/Products_list.phtml?id=1…
or
http://www.computeralliance.com.au/ssd-drives
I am thinking of the $70 – 120GB Kingston 2.5" SSDNow V300 if compatible
If i go for the 4th gen i5 I would also need to get FLIRC and Remote.
I am currently leaning towards the i5 as the extra boost in CPU can help with the transcoding but the 4th gen GPU isn't as good as the 5th gen i3 GPU [plus the extra cost of the flirc remote and I may as well go for the 5th gen i5]
With all this in mind it brings me to a rough price of
5th gen i3 $560 [400 NUC + 90 8GB RAM + ~70 SSD]
4th gen i5 $600 [440 NUC + 90 8GB RAM + ~70 SSD + ~40 FLIRC, may need to get remote too]
5th gen i5 $670 [510 NUC + 90 8GB RAM + ~70SSD]
I could probably save a bit by not getting any more RAM if my 2011 macbook pro ram (4GB) is compatible and sufficient.
5th gen i3 $470 [400 NUC + ~70 SSD]
4th gen i5 $550 [440 NUC + ~70 SSD + ~40 FLIRC, may need to get remote too]
5th gen i5 $580 [510 NUC + ~70 SSD]
I think the responses will say the price difference between the 4th gen i5 and the 5th gen is minimal so that will cross off the 4th gen.
The CPU boost from the i3 to the i5 will help with transcoding and any other tasks i run in the background (unless the i3 can do this comfortably).
I only foresee streaming to TV from the NUC on maybe 2 max streams (in the future) for anything that requires transcoding and using the plex on my NAS for my laptops that don't require any transcoding, etc.
Please provide me with some information that can make the choice easier.
Sorry for the long post.
I think the 5th gen i3 supports 4K over DisplayPort: https://www.pccasegear.com/products/30757
It is hard to find TVs with DisplayPort in but it might help in future. There doesn't seem to be much difference in encoding speed according to notebookcheck. The 5th gen i3 is also a bit cheaper. May as well pick that one. Have a look at:

BTW, note that Netflix won't let you do 4K on generic hardware (and won't let you do 1080p on Linux/Chrome).
