  • oh, thats a really good deal.
and 3 year warranty on top of that.
    noob on tv , what's Response time: 6.5ms. ?
    (really need a tv here)

    • +2

for the price its ok, but id hold out for a full HD tv 1920*1080, only problem is they do cost a bit more, but a bit more future proof with blu ray on the up.

      Contrast ratio: 1500:1.
      very average

      HDMI x 3. Built-in HD tuner
but this is good, means you could plug in a blu ray player, media center and a amp/camera/other device….
if you want a cheap tv this is ok, if you want something your going to have for years to come that is a great product, maybe keep looking…

42" full HD (so a fair bit bigger) where at dick smiths for under 1k….

GreatWhiteHunter comment below is on the money i rekon.

      • +2

You don't need full HD for 32' TV. Can't tell the different anyway.
There's a bit of different between under $1k and under $400…

        • good point but there is also a bit of a difference between 32" and 42" with better stats all round…

you do have a point, but my point is if you want a cheap tv this is good, if you want quality hold out, save up and spend more on something your going to be really happy with.

        • Incorrect. You can tell the difference if you connect your TV to a computer.

  • JxToF: BUY THIS TV. BUY THIS TV. BUY THIS TV. Incredible deal right here. If you're not up to date with Response Times; 6.5ms certainly will NOT worry you! :)

  • Incredible deal!

  • nice price, the response time is not the worry, the contrast ratio is not that flash, might be better suited as pc/games console monitor
ps anyone know which panel AWA puts inside their tvs?

    • They're LG panels.

    • don't think it would make a good game/pc monitor. good for general viewing though :)

  • +1

Nothing to worry about response time, all in all its a decent tv for the price, just hold onto that purchase receipt (and orig box is possible) so you can have trouble free warranty process if indeed that occurs.

  • Great deal, the 3 year warranty gives some confidence in the product despite the brand. This will probably be the biggest OzBargain vote this month.

    • Wow!. Might undo my bad karma from neg-voting the free anti-snore plugs that don't work :-)

  • Buying One tomoz!!

  • I bought a refurbed telefunken 32" lcd /w 2 x HDMI & HD Tuner, same res etc for $400+delivery. That was a pretty good deal as far as im concerned but this is bloody excellent considering you get a 3year warranty! Deal!

  • It is a good deal but I am going to stay away from AWA. I will stick to the 3 "S" with TVs - Sony, Samsung & Sharp. But thats just my opinion :) Still a good deal.

    • Sanyo?
      Lol

    • -1

lol, you'd pick Sanyo over Panasonic?

      • If it's a Plasma then yeah :P

      • Sanyo is a name brand like Panasonic.
        It's just cheaper.
Which = win in my books.

        • I didn't think sanyo has made anything since, like, the 90's, i think they are only a brand name now…. they buy no name brands and put there logo onto it… will have to do more research though

          • @wisc: They're still quite a large electronics company in Japan.. We just don't get many of their products.

            • +1

@pais: I had a good Sanyo LCD for a few years, it was excellent

          • +1

@wisc: Sanyo make a few good things, batteries for one.

  • Any0ne had experience using a 32 720 tv as a computer monitor? Is it too big when u sit up close? What about the PQ?

    • If you sit up close it would be too big in my books, its 81cm. Its never going to be as good as a Monitor mate

    • I did for a while, but eventually I wanted higher res and got a 24inch.

    • only good if you're watching movies or videos off the monitor. the resolution isn't good enough to hold on it's own.

  • +2

No doubt this is a terrific bargain.

But don't get your hopes up about the high quality of the TV. The larger AWA sets look awful and their picture quality is only OK.

Bang for buck you can't beat this, but it aint a great TV.

    • +1

I got 2. The way I see it (not counting running costs) is that I'm guaranteed 3 years out of it, making it just over $100 a year. Far as I know some of the "better" brands don't even guarantee that.

The picture quality is fine if you're sitting 2-3+ metres away. One was for the office (just the lunch room, so very minimal usage) and the other is in the bedroom at home where I'm half asleep anyway when it's on, so they all appear to be perfect picture quality and do the job well, anything bigger or more expensive would simply be a waste. Of course if you want to build a media room this isn't the TV for you.

EDIT: Apparently, they use LG panels.

  • I've had an AWA TV in the past and it was OK. Pales next to my new Bravia though.

This is a good deal for an Entry level LCD.

Remember it's NOT full HD. So PS3, XBOX and BluRay, whilst they will work, will not be at their potential. Personally, I would pay the extra and go full HD.

    • +1

      It's 32" - you won't notice the difference.

      • Exactly - and doesn't the xbox only do 720 anyway? (or maybe I'm crazy)

My mums TV is 42" full HD and when I hooked the xbox up when I was around there I saw negligible difference to a 38-40" 720 AWA one I've hooked it up on also (granted they weren't side by side for comparison, still).

If it was a 42" playing blu-ray the full HD would shine, for general TV watching a 32" 720px TV does a solid job (and absolutely rapes an old analog TV, it's like moving from dialup to fibre optic internet)

  • If anyone was wondering.

I've had a Full HD TV next to a regular TV, same size LCD.

Both pictures looked the same watching Digital TV, even when watching the HD 1080i channels.

I would only worry about the lack of HD resolution if you often do other things besides digital TV.

  • Hi Dover or anyone else that may be able to provide advice,

Can you further explain in detail the difference. Eg. How much difference? Is it the colour? contrast? Is it terrible watching sports?

    How is the sound like?

I heard that since it is a 32 inch tv? Full Hd does not matter. Does this still apply? I want to get it for a potential new ps3.

    • They seem fine to me. I haven't watched any sports yet (it's only been 2 days) general TV is fine though, as is xbox. The old TV I was watching was a 42" full HD so this is a "downgrade", although I can't tell too much.

Frame itself looks a bit lame and the led on/off lights are far too bright and need a bit of tape if you have them in the bedroom; unless you like sleeping with the room lit up that is.

Quality seems fine (apparently uses an LG panel, can't confirm though), price is good, sound is standard for a TV (spend $100 and get a logitech 5 speaker system, worth it for movies & sport to feel immersed in it more).

Though if you're spending more on the PS3 then the TV, it could be worth waiting for one of those "TV and PS3" bundles and getting that.

    • The contrast and response rate are not that of a more expensive TV.
6.5ms is OK for sport, but you may get a little bit of motion blur, particularly when there is first moving camera work (ie football, cricket ball rolling on the ground). I noticed it with 10ms, and you can get LCD's these days with next to 0 refresh rate. 1500 Contrast is also not brilliant. Blacks will be more of a dark grey, although the only way you'll notice is by comparing it to another TV or by looking at the frame of your TV and comparing it to the screen. That will be quite noticeable.
My AWA sound was quite ordinary, very tinny speakers. With HDMI out though, you could plug it into an Amp if you wanted better sound.
If you are buying a PS3 - DO NOT buy this TV!!!!!!!!!!!
I got the Bravia/PS3 deal and love it!!! Your Bluray and PS3 gaming will NOT be as good on this TV, guaranteed!!! It will be ok and a lot of games are only 720p (which this TV will do), but Bluray and those few 1080p games will not be done any justice.

      Definately buy a Full HD (1080p….1920x1080) screen for a PS3!!! (My 2c)

  • I'm very new to HD tvs, and to be honest, dont get caught up in all the WOW factor full HD versus not, particularly in a 32inch (watching from inside a shop side by side).

All im looking for is a good deal, moderate sized tv to replace my old analog tv, would this do the trick? once i move into a larger place ill consider a more expensive, full HD 42 inch or so.

Stupid question i know, but do tv's with build in HD still pick up analog? Because of the placement of my unit, previous digital set top boxes were quite touchy when it comes to weather conditions (eg wind direction), and I'd like the option of switching back to analog if necessary…

    • I agree that there isn't any wow factor with full HD on a 32" TV. Maybe its better if you are sitting up close playing games but not for HDTV and DVD.

I bought a 42" Full HD LCD from Ebay and I've been very happy with it for the price I paid. The reason I mention this is that my NVidia card identifies the TV as a Targa LCD16. I found from searching the net that AWA also use this panel / TV. So in a round about way I feel the quality is fine on AWA TVs for a first/bedroom LCD. 3 year warranty is also kick ass. I certainly didn't get that from the Ebay seller.

TVs with built in HD also have an analog tuner (generally). My analog reception was crap but I get good reception on digital channels including HD ones. It all depends which towers are sending which signals but you won't know 'til you have a go.

  • They will soon shut down analog stations anyway so no point. Get a better roof antenna!

  • Great deal. i only pay 376 with my staff discount card. Will bebuying 2

  • Someone had a Sony 32" Full HD for $800 the other day

  • +2

Just be forewarned. These AWAs have a VERY long lag when you change channels - to the point of being downright annoying.

    • +1

Can anyone confirm this for this particular set?

      • I thought I already did.

  • "but do tv’s with build in HD still pick up analog?" no, digital only, if there is no digital signal there is no analog signal either, there are some dual tuner pc cards that can do both analog&digital

  • how would this compare to a samsung 26" series 4 tv?

    • +1

The Samsung's usually have dynamic contrast and are slightly sharper. With the AWA, you've got 6"+ which is fairly massive in TV real estate (not to mention 3 year warranty vs 1 year)

      • what about picture quality tho?

        • Those attributes are pertinent to picture quality.

  • Picked one up tonight and we just enjoyed Hungry Beast together. Very satisfied.

  • Mate,i looked at this 6 weeks ago. No rush to get a great deal,It's always that price.

  • I just picked up my TV's at $376 each with a friends staff discount card :D

I'm not sure how much stock they had but they were selling out very fast.

  • My sister bought one first thing this morning (against my advice) from Big W QV. They had about 10 left. Just finished setting it up for her… 2 bright dead pixels and 1 black dead pixel. Pretty damn annoyed. Now to take it back for a refund…

    • +4

      Rub them out.

    • You'll probably be fine with the refund, but I know AWA's policy when I bought mine about 5 years ago was that up to 5 dead pixels was "acceptable" and would not constitute a warranty repair!!

      • +1

Big W refunded the money straight away. They said it was their 3rd return! Cheers.

  • 10 left, i gota hurry. lol.
How would u compare the Sanyo at BigW?
some are cheaper but only in 1 year waranty

    • I wouldn't compare them. Seriously, pay an extra $150 and get yourself a Samsung or the like. You won't regret it.

  • Just got the Misses to pick one up - Lets hope all is good

  • Saw people wheeling them out of BigW Garden City, Brisbane this lunch-time.
4 left on display in centre aisle,, but they had 5 already loaded in trolleys, lined up and waiting for sale at the AV section.

Stores have a fairly large quota of these.. The above example (at QV) is a fairly bad one — QV don't get much stock of anything bulky in because of it's location. In contrast, all other smaller stores get about 100 of these, with larger stores receiving about 200.

  • +2

I'm not sure if anyone will read this, but I thought it might interest a few people.

I used to have a VIVO 32" LCD (don't have it anymore) and it was faster at channel switching then this TV.

    However there is one difference.

The VIVO was faster at channel switching, but it was a lot more sensitive to TV reception.

On this TV I have much better reception using a indoor amplified antenna.

    I'm loving this TV! :D

    • Interesting!!!
I'm speculating here, but perhaps "slow switching" correlates to a comparatively large buffer of programme content that the tuner can access for error correction?!?
That would seem to be a possible fit for the scenario you're describing SamDude…

Is there someone out there with detailed knowledge of DVB-T tuner engineering???

      Live Long and Prosper,
      Jean-Luc.

Edit - I've put this question to a contact in the industry & am waiting on a engineer's response.

Layby'd one of these today for a family member. The store apparently had 80 in stock at the beginning of the day which might have lasted out the day. A couple of people were carting out two and they were also piling up at the layby counter. The display model looked OK, at least better than the Sanyo it sat next to, but certainly far from spectacular (there looked to be some colour "bleeding" on text), however I am used to bluray, full HD and a much larger screen. Seems a good entry into flat screen on the cheap or a bedroom TV or kids/Wii.

    • +1

For what it's worth, many stores only use RCA cables (faulty conduits) or - at best - component cables.

  • Geelong has like 150 left if you need to find one! But they got double that!

  • Good set, very good money. Yuo will be impressed. IT is a bargain.

As discussed, it does take some time to change channels. My friends tv (samsung) has similar problems. I am comparing this with a CRT.

But it is definitely worth it.

HAve only used it to watch tv.

DOnt bother comparing this tv with other tvs at the store, it is definitely not as good. However, it is pretty good standalone at home.

  • Just a word of warning

The tuner is these units (and in fact any AWA unit) is pretty crappy

At Christmas time I bought two 22" models for my kids and they couldn't pick up all the DTV channels - in particular Win WinHD and Go

The other brand units I ended up swapping for had no such problems.

Being a sucker for punishment I bought one of these AWA 32" units today and found it had the same problem. I even took it to the in-laws and pre-tuned all channels, returned home and was getting "no signal". I have not had this problem before with my other brand 42" plasmas and even el cheapo MTV STB's have picked up all DTV channels.

These units obviously require a stronger signal than others and I'm not about to spend 100's of dollars upgrading my antenna or new amplifier. Kinda defeats the purpose of a cheaper TV.

    • You raise a fair point but just always remember if you have a crappy antenna it will always handicap you in the long run.

      • +2

Yep — hooked it up on a bad antenna and a bad cable, and it sucked. There's no point making a super computer for online gaming if you only have dialup :) (and then blaming the computer for the speed). It works fine when hooked up to a decent antenna.

  • anyone else had problems with DTV? =/

  • I purchased on Thursday, and when I replaced my CRT 21" Ch9(90+99 as well) were blocky. All others were great.

Remembered I still had the STB in line with a crappy antenna lead, so bypassed that and all is great. Yes I think the tuner is dodgy, but $396 and 3 years warranty, for a 2nd tele it is super. In 3 years we will all be watching 3D in a "holodeck" won't we. I paid 3000 for a 50" Panasonic HD 768 3 years ago and the equiv set is now 1000. Yes the pana is superb and changes channel quickly, wish I had gone for full HD though.

  • I have connected my AWA to an indoor antenna that comes with USB tuners. Picks up all channels perfectly except any ABC ones. I would say the tuner on these is excellent. Even picks up a few analog channels though not watchable quality.

Really happy with my purchase as I was not happy replacing my Loewe 100hz CRT with a cheap brand. But so far it was exceeded my expectations.

  • I got one and it is OK, especially for the price. Video is a bit "plasticy" (dunno how else to describe - overly softened but with shapened edges?) using a standard yellow AV cable to a Foxtel IQ. Looking close-up, people's complexions look like they're cast members of the Thunderbirds!

Next weekend I'll hook it up to my Media Centre using HDMI and the Foxtel using Component and see how it goes. One thing I've noticed is that the LCD backlight is a bit too bright, and I can't find a way to turn it down. I'd sacrifice some of the total brightness in order to get the blacks to be blacker.

We replaced an Aldi Tevion 19" 16:10 (with inbuild DVD) that had been our spare., but became the main TV when the Sansui (UGGGHHH) blew up and they wanted $500 for a new power supply for it. One day, I'll buy a decent TV (LOL)

    • Looking close-up, people’s complexions look like they’re cast members of the Thunderbirds!

Would that be Series 1 or Series 2?
I mean, OK, the series 1 marionettes had wooden heads and oh boy couldn't you just tell that they weren't real people,,, but when they changed to the new high-tech' plastic heads for Series 2, wow, you kept on wondering why the actors had black wires sticking up out of their hair…

      ~~
      \_/7

      • +1

Or possibly the critically acclaimed, multi-award nominated 2004 Thunderbirds live action movie….
which managed to be both black wire free, and entertainment free in one special little package……

        • Hmmm, yes,, I think the acting was less wooden in the '60s Gerry Anderson productions… :)

Oh, and BTW, Happy Birthday for Friday AndyDude!!!

quite happy with it. Good price and 3 years warranty.
Live in apartment with shared antenna and i can all of the channels.

    no problems with that.
