AirAsia Took My Money! How Do I Get Them to Return It?

Would appreciate any good advice on this matter.
I had booked AirAsia international return flights (via KL) for my in-laws online via CheapOair, and paid by credit card, which AirAsia confirmed with the booking.

On the day of the flight, my in-laws went to the check in counter to be told that their tickets were still booked, but the payment had not been done.
On further clarification, AirAsia staff told them that AirAsia had received the payment, but apparently there was some error and so they returned the money back into the credit card.

They then refused to allow my in-laws to board the flight, until they were able to come up with a cash payment, to again pay for the full return flights (which fortunately they had enough dollars, and had to quickly change them into the local currency and make the payment - all just before the flight left)

My credit card statement shows money leaving and not returned. My bank confirmed this.

AirAsia continue to insist they repaid the amount into my credit card and want me instead to prove to them I did not receive it.

I have since made a formal complaint to them for which I have not yet heard back for nearly three weeks.

I am now trying to get my bank to dispute the transaction.

It sounds like you paid Cheapoair but Cheapoair didn't pay AirAsia. As they are essentially acting as the travel agent, your issue should be with them.

So the dispute should be with Airasia.

not if they returned the money to cheapoair.

The charge on the credit card would be for Cheapo Air. If you book through a travel agent, then you should always go through them for any issues. They are working on behalf of you so you don't need to deal with airlines, car rental agencies, hotels, tours etc. You had one job.

  • Claim Chargeback? Maybe?

file a dispute with your CC

tell them the transaction was not authorised / goods not received (whichever terminology they use)

you have paid for something that you did not receive. it's a simple civil matter. get onto your CC today

Alright so your bank really should be able to fix this for you.

Even you can fix it. Ask them when they refunded the money then look online at your bank statements take a screenshot and show there is no refund. Your bank should be able to provide proof of this for you.

  • Thanks all! All sorted now. I've noticed that AirAsia has now returned the money…without any explanation!
