32" TCL LCD TV - $278 - (Harvey Norman & Joyce Mayne)

50

Unsure if this constitutes a bargain but I think it gets pretty close and should make a good bedroom TV.

Model: TCL L32D2700
* Resolution: HD (1366 × 768)
* Inputs: HDMI x2, USB x1, Component x1, Composite x1, Optical, VGA
* Contrast: 3000:1 (could be a deal breaker for some)
* Brightness: 240 (cd/m2)
* Smart TV: No
* 3D TV: No
* Hertz: 50Hz
* Power consumption: 116w (seems a bit thirsty)
* Warranty: 3 years

I own a 65" TCL and have been very happy with it's quality.
I'd rate it above most other cheap brands: Hitachi, JVC, Akai, Kogan, Palsonic, Soniq etc.
But below the top brands: LG, Sony, Panasonic, Samsung.
YMMV

Joyce Mayne also matching the price.

      Thanks, will add that to the brands I think TCL is better than ;)

    • Bought this last week, perfect for the kids to use with their new WiiU and a Roku attached for streaming movies as well as watching Netflix. The only issue with this screen are the speakers, they are truly terrible. A set of Logitech PC speakers has resolved that issue though.

      Another big plus with this screen is its ability to read off my 1TB USB3.0 ext HDD for media. I didn't expect that kind of compatability for such as small price.

    No thanks

      For a 32", particularly bedroom TV I don't see the problem with it. If using elsewhere, fair enough. I'd like to know the contrast levels though…

      EDIT: FWIW I didn't neg you :)
      EDIT2: Contrast/Brightness details found and added above.

        its only an issue if you use a console or pc on it

        i dunno, close to $300 for a HD 32" TV? Under $200 for a china brand is more like it.

    For the resolution not really a bargain

    • Not arguing, deal votes suggests your of popular opinion :)

      However I will ask what alternatives there are. 28Degrees has mentioned 2 which in my opinion are each slightly lower quality. Genuine question coz I happen to be in the market for a bedroom tele :)

  • I've owned a couple of TCL TVs and can vouch for the build quality. We've got a one of their 22inch (?) TVs in our garage which, despite being subject to a ridiculous about of dust, dirt, heat, humidity and mouse poo, is still going strong after six years. Only downside (IMHO) is the on-screen UI which is pretty average/clunky.

    Got a couple of TCLs, good value for the money, although I only paid $199 for my 32" so thats more the price I would regard a bargain.

    • Fair enough. I understand that. Was talking to the wife earlier about this being $278 and Soniq (ergh) being $199 and she wants that one. So instead of getting Soniq (contrast 1400:1) I might just wait for TCL or another brand to reach the $199 mark - I did see an older OB deal with TCL being that price so logic suggests it should happen again.

  • I was online looking at a December 1975 copy of the Melbourne Age on the weekend.
    Sony 31 inch portable TVs were advertised for $559.

    • That was a LOT of money back then, probably equivalent to $2500 - $3000 today, maybe even more?

    But you try and tell the young people today that… and they won't believe ya

    • Yeah it took me awhile to get my head around the fact that 3-5 year old 80cm CRT's (Sonys and Panasonics) were sitting on the curb for collection. This is going back a few years when everyone started moving to Plasma/LCD. From a value of >$1000 to $0 in such few short years. I threw out a few 68cm TV's at the time, absolutely nothing wrong with them, I could get my head about their bulk but for me it was ultimately their poor screen resolution that made me move on. In other ways they were superior (true blacks for example).

      It's a whole different economy nowadays.
