If this was FULL HD definately

    • FHDefinitely.

    15.6" HD display, at >$700.

    No.

    Besides that though, seems good.

    • -1

Completely agree with you, despite the price being somewhat low

      • -1

My negative vote on this post has been revoked by OZBargain because of the negative notes.

Funnily enough, there are many others who agree with me too; the system isn't the best in my opinion.

        • $700 mark is still very firmly in the realm of HD screen territory.

  • With dedicated GPU as it's only redeeming feature, and with both Skylake and GeForce 920m supporting QHD and 4K output, ASUS excluded DisplayPort. Smart.

Always interesting how manufacturers insert "LED" into specs. when screen in actually LCD. Does LED backlight seem more redeeming than CCFL to consumers?

    • I believe CCFL hasnt been used in a quite a while. They are all LED now.

That 768p doe. What do you use it for?

    • 920M is a very weak dedicated GPU. The integrated HD Graphics 520 has very similar processing power, with better energy efficiency. The only real upside to the 920M is that it has it's own RAM.

      • +1

I think the geforce is there as a HN showroom selling point… salesman can say it has dedicated gfx to the customer…

    Notebook $723 @ HN

    How much is it normally?

    • +1

Looks like it was $998. It's $899 at Bing Lee. $998 is the cheapest price on staticICE at Domayne. $999 at TGG and JB.

    • -8

Why don't you look into it yourself for once?

      • +14

jv's question is rhetorical - implying it should have been in title as per guidelines. I doubt he has interest in purchasing this item.

        • +2

I am sure someone out there is writing a thesis on the Anthropology of OzBargainer's.

        • -2

have a look at the front page…how many of the upvoted deals actually quantify the "non-sale" price. Store reps get hammered for using the RRP (or MSRP) and most others dont bother posting the non-sale price. Usually someone posts the price/saving early on in the post, usually in reply to JV's useless comment enquiring about it.

JV usually doesn't have an interest in doing anything other than being a nuisance

so, instead of ignoring him, you've taken it upon yourself to trip him at opportunity?

only the last link notes that you should:
"Summarise briefly why it is a bargain - why did you buy it or consider it worth sharing? How does the price compare to elsewhere? Can you comment from personal experience on the quality of the product?"

          fantastic, you found them…

Shall we go about being a nuisance and hassle all the deals that don't dot the "i's" and cross the "t's"?

all the deals that don't dot the "i's" and cross the "t's"?

That's up to you… I can only do so much…

        • @jv:

You do a mighty fine job of it. Have you tried being actually constructive about it? I sometimes see a glimmer of that behaviour but never actual outright constructive-ness

        • @aim54x:

Have you tried being actually constructive about it?

You mean like asking the OP "How much is it normally?" ????

I can't change the title or description to add this information…

        • @jv: You could stick it into the comment….like so many others do when you ask the question

        • -1

          @aim54x:

You could stick it into the comment…

Not everyone reads through every single comment. It belongs in the description as per the posting rules…

        • +2

          @jv:
I scanned all three links I posted earlier, none of them explicitly say there needs to be a "saving" or "original price" in the title, only the price and a mention of shipping if applicable. There is also the suggestion of a reasoning for why it is a "deal" asI directly quoted, and even then it does not explicitly say there is a NEED for an original price.

I do agree, having a price or saving is very nice in the description or title.

Your usually in the first few comments so it is usually seen, and you would probably save a power user/mod some time if you posted the price in your comment. Just saying

        • -2

          @aim54x:

it does not explicitly say there is a NEED for an original price.

Where have I said it needs to have the original price ???

        • +1

          @jv:

          You keep asking

          "How much is it normally?"

which suggests you would like to know the original price, then you direct people to:

"Have a look at the deal posting rules…"

          and have also said

"It belongs in the description as per the posting rules"

which is suggestive that it is in the posting guidelines that the original or normal price is necessary.

Just pointing out what is suggested in your comments and directions. This can go on for days, but it has been swell but the swelling has gone down

        • -4

          @aim54x:

You keep asking "How much is it normally?"

But where have I said it needs to have the original price as you stated ?

    • +2

      https://www.pricehipster.com.au/product?id=VkxqhlDPVg

Looks like for a short time they put up the price so they could say it's reduced all the time.

    • +3

@aim54x: I think jv's question is quite valid as the normal selling price is useful information; it can indicate how great the bargain is.

I also agree with you that jv is generally a nuisance; just not this time.

I'm thinking that 4GB memory might be a bit limiting for a core i5.

  • Really keen on this, is 4GB enough RAM these days for a notebook?

    • -1

Yes. SOme are even 2GB. Is enough.

    • +1

As long as you're just using it for normal things. If you never close browser tabs, play games, or start doing photo/video editing then you're going to want more.

  • Does not seem like a good deal to me considering about 3 Years ago I bought a new Toshiba laptop on special for $699 from I believe HN also, specs were: Intel i7, 8GB Memory, GT 630m 2GB Videocard but this was during the time they did huge sales like 40% off or something like that.

    • +3

AUD was worth more than USD back then.

  • Pretty sure Costco Ringwood are selling $719, if you are member.

  • At this price range and with these specs and a bulky footprint, a better deal can be had elsewhere. $750 should be abe to get you a better specked Inspiron from Dell on sale ((which is quite bloody often).

    • I don't think I've seen Dell with a better specced external GPU for $750

    • +1

What's the best currently available for $750?

I've been looking for a while, and while this particular laptop doesn't meet my needs, I don't think I could name a laptop currently available with equal or better spec in every major area (chip, RAM, screen, graphics card, optical drive, hard disk) for $750.

  • +4

    1366 x 768 on a laptop; never again

    • Oh man so true. I have no idea how 768 is still hanging around.

    • That resolution was so 2005 you would think that in 2016 a cheap laptop might have improved from that.

      • 1600x900 should be the absolute minimum and anything above $800 needs to have 1920x1080 or more ppi for me to pull the trigger.

  • +1

I wish laptop manufacturers would let you choose ssd or hdd, rather than having to buy an ssd, instal it and have another useless hdd cluttering up the spares box.

    • +1

I don't really care either way, but just make the HDD easily accessible, which most are, so you're offered the options of DIY.

I bet it would be much much cheaper for you to throw in a 500GB as opposed to them putting one in.

    • They would/could probably cost an arm and a leg for it. Most consumers not knowing about market prices for SSDs.

  • is 2 cell battery good enough on this laptop? or is it that these 6th gen processor have very low energy usage?

    • Not sure about this one, but I don't think people buy 15.6", 2kg+ laptops to use away from power points.

      • but they do expect battery to last for more than an hour

    • +3

To be a smartarse, it depends on the capacity of the cells and how they are wired.

      2x 4000mah 7.2V cells in parallel, 8x 1000mah 7.2V cells in parallel, 2x 8000mah 3.6V cells in serial are all 8000mah 7.2V batteries

      further explanation

      http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/serial_and_parall…

According to Asus it is a 37Whr battery pack with a 2S1P configuration (ie two cells in serial) but this still does not provide us with any indication of battery life for the laptop unfortunately. It sounds low to me, and the fact that they are not quoting battery life means it probably is not fantastic.

  • I can't seem to find any reviews for this online anywhere. Can anyone recommend any good sites to look on ?

    • It's very hard to find reviews for specific configurations.

Sadly we seem to get dumbed down versions of many popular models, so the overseas model might come with a 256Gb SSD standard, while ours has a 5400rpm 500GB disk, so the review of the OS model is basically irrelevant.

      • Noticed this a lot recently. Very annoying.

  • I'm weighing up between this and the Toshiba C50-C02N at JB.

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/laptops/toshiba/…

Whats peoples thoughts ? the specs seem to be similar unless I've missed something. The Toshiba is currently $720 in-store.

    • The Toshiba has an earlier generation i5 chip and integrated graphics, a better claimed battery life, and otherwise basically the same.

The chip only seems to make a modest difference (a few percent), but I don't know enough about graphics to be able to say what effect having a discrete, but fairly low-spec, graphics card will have.

Whether the battery is important depends on how portable you need it to be, but as someone said earlier, buying a 2kg 15.6" luggable implies portability is a pretty low priority.

      • Thanks for that. I ended up purchasing this one online for C&C for $698 with the $25 discount for signing up to the newsletter.
