Windows 10 Rollback to Windows 8.1

After rolling back to Windows 8.1:

  1. I cannot logon using a Microsoft account

  2. An App that was installed in Windows 8.1 but was updated in Windows 10 no longer works and cannot be uninstalled or updated

  3. My internet access is working fine BUT there is always an exclamation mark stating there is "no internet access" or "limit access".

Did anyone experience the same problem or am I the only one that rolled back to Win 8.1?

The easiest fastest fix really is to perform a re-fresh of Windows 8.1. You will preserve personal data, documents and settings, but apps, drivers and such will be wiped.

I don't see a better way to fix all your problems — the way I see it, the rollback to Win 8.1 may not have been entirely successful (maybe a driver was incompatible, or your antivirus might have prevented Windows from making some changes) meaning you have a rather buggy OS — attempting to manually debug each and every issue would be time consuming and you'd be better off saving yourself the migraine and just re-do Windows 8.1 from scratch.

    • The refresh function isn't working since it won't allow me to use the Windows 8 dvd (set of 6 discs) I created using HP's recovery media function.

It will allow me to use USB but HP's recovery media won't let me create a USB copy since I have already created a dvd copy.

I won't do a full format yet since the OS is still stable and usable except for that 1 app. I may have no other choice.

You'll need to acquire a clean copy of windows 8 then. There are download tools available at Microsoft

        http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/upgrade-product…

Make sure you download the right copy of windows 8. There is the 8.0 version and the later 8.1 variant, and your product license key will only activate on one of the two products.

You probably will not need to enter a product key if you are just reinstalling Windows.

If you need to retrieve your product key from your pc just use product key finder software and write it down before you begin the reinstall
        http://sourceforge.net/projects/ekeyfinder/

        • I didn't know that you could download a clean copy of Win 8.1, I knew you could with Win 10 which is what I did and I burnt the ISO to DVD.

Thanks for the link, I will give it a shot when my internet data usage resets.

          I'm guessing it's at least a 3-4 gig download.

        • @Wallace:

2.7 gigs when it's uncompressed I believe. Thats how much it's taking on my flash drive atm.

This also works, you don't need to download or install anything with this method:

May I ask why you rolled back?

Best thing to do is to do a re- install of Windows 8.1 or better yet Windows 10

    • I rolled back because I couldn't disable auto-update and I have limited internet data.

In Win 10 the fan on my laptop would activate much more often than Win 8.1 even when I am just doing normal internet surfing.

Also, I use classic start with Win 8.1, Win 10 just felt like more unwanted online features that I never use.

That said, I still do like Win 10!

  • Most of the issues should be able to be fixed with a re-installation. Download the media creation tool for windows 10 here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10. Then, through the exe, download the Win10 files to a USB and run it (if it doesn't work in the windows environment, try and boot the USB drive and clean install it).

    • I already have a copy but for now I really prefer Win 8.1 to Win 10

      • Sorry, misread your post-thought you were going from 8.1->10.
