Mobile Data Pack Questions

hi there,

anyone have an experience with mobile data pack? e.g. amaysim/aldi mobile data pack, how does it work? are you still allow to make phone call or sms? or just receiving call? I only make few calls so thinking of getting data pack and make occasional call, also would I able to keep my current number and churn into data pack plan?

thanks guys

  • For simplicity, the 12 month expiry of the 10GB data pack itself, PAYG calls/text (by adding funds to your account) - and the current offer here, Amaysim would probably be your best bet.

All Amaysim SIM's have call and text functionality attached.

If the option to port your current number doesn't present in the sign-up process for the 'just the data pack' offer, you will need to go back and sign-up with their 'As You Go' mobile plan, first. The option to port your current number will definitely present there.

I am fairly sure that the pack offer applies to the first purchase of a 10GB pack, irrespective of being otherwise signed-up.
Check on live-chat if you are concerned with that relative to the porting.

That 10GB offer, above, ends on the 18th of January, but you should have time in any case to sign-up, have the SIM arrive to activate with ported number, and to then buy the data-pack with code for that (very likely) 30% saving.

If, at the time you go on live-chat to activate the 10GB pack, you have successfully added funds (make it a decent amount - you can roll it over when expiry comes), for calls and text, that credit balance may be given the same 12 month expiry as the pack.
(It happened the last time for me with small credit remainder after pack purchase. I was a bit surprised, but of incidental interest as I only very occasionally use that SIM to make an outgoing call or to send a text).

Any additional funds added at anytime after that will then revert to a 3 month expiry period - unless that has changed very recently.

I hope that helps. There are other options, including Aldi, but absent knowing just how much data you will end up using relative to what would otherwise be a monthly cycle, the Amaysim option above is probably the go for you.

If you mean buying the 10GB data pack at full price, yes definitely.
However you won't be able to apply the DATAYR promo code to an existing account regardless of this being your first time buying ie. No 30% off anything. These codes only work on the new sign up page

And you're right about not being offered the option to port your number signing up to a data pack as a new user.

Also you're correct about the 12 month expiry of the entire As You Go credit when adding the 10GB pack. Both myself and my father are on this, my dad spends less than $10 on calls for the whole year since he still has a landline, very glad i took this option because i don't have to worry about the $10 top up every 3 months, and much cheaper than buying 1GB pack each month, if you don't use it all within the month it's wasted, and if you happen to need a little bit more the 7.2c AYG rate could break the bank.

      • Yes, likely a pretty good option, and without much hassle if data-use is modest and calls are made infrequently.

As for the discount code, I seem to recall (may well be inaccurately) one or two people arranging something via live-chat on the basis of them being effectively 'new' customers - in being very recent and then buying a pack for the first time.

Mentioning the 'desire to port', issue, might swing things if the OP wants to give it a go.
I would in the same circumstance - even if I bought the pack at full price first. Might be able to sign-up and then get the code-saving applied as ASG credit…
        Anything's possible!

If you can still get through and actually speak to an Amaysim Rep, maybe easier than on live-chat for such a thing, I would reckon.
I've had a few unexpectedly nice things happen with various CSR's over the years, including specific (uncongested) APN access that I shouldn't have ever been granted (and still use) on one account, on a certain telco's network…

Presumed-she, 'Jugg.Judy' may want to try, anyway. Maybe offer to send photos, if necessary. Um… in a thoroughly non-sleazy way, of course..

        Lol.
        Have a good weekend, bonz!

        • Pleading to a rep may work then again may not, depending on who you get, in my experience some are quite accommodating, others do it by the book, then there are the inept ones too.

Judy, if you were going to send a photo, get one off Tas, don't use your own, they're just not sleazy enough, lol.

          'Ave a good W/E 2U2 Tas

        • Why do I bother (?) and not just because of 'taciturn' OP's, where such could easily, and maybe is intended to be, a lack of courtesy - or maybe it just comes down to the understanding of, or lack of, a sense of humour.

Speaking of 'humour', or my particular attempt at it in the comment, above.

OP's particular attempt /play on 'Judge Judy', aside, 'juggs' = unpleasant slang for part of the female anatomy

I'm guessing that 'Judy' knew that when she, or he, settled on a username.

Metasyntactic Placeholder Tas, T'as, has decided that it might not, may not, be too late for an exciting NewYear resolution. Maybe something along the lines of 'Less time on OzBargain = More'?

Might just give that a go.

(Weekend GoodWishes for you, revoked, bonz!)

        • @Tas:
Hey i did notice his/her spelling of the username and can relate to your attempt at the "sleazy" humour, not sure if it offended her/him, i was going to throw my own humour in with my previous comment but held my tongue/fingers for fear of offending her/him if OP is indeed a she. Why are we throwing blows at each other when the person asking for help is AWOL?

I really feel humble when a total stranger wished me a good weekend on our first communication, or was it your subtle message to a certain someone on common courtesy?

I was going to share some trick/advice i learnt on mobile telecommunications, but …. sigh!

My good wishes still stand despite your revocation, T'as ;-)

        • @bonz:
Maybe hang tight on those tricks/advice. There will be other threads with more and active participants than this one, in which to share.

I am assuming your OzB newbie-enthusiasm to remain intact, of course, though nothing current in ACL that effectively confers any extra warranty-time on that, my friend.

          Regards.

        • @Tas: Just let this abandoned thread die, see you in some other thread

  • OP, what is/was your usage pattern? did you take advantage of free virgin- virgin calls, if you did, this option may not work for you. I was in a similar situation, except i was on the prepaid $19 simple offer.

  • I'm getting close to my data allowance on my old Vaya plan and can't get any extra from them without a lot of money. Can someone suggest a cheap way of getting about 500-1gb of data - I have a dual sim Moto G so need it to be micro sized. Don't car which company, just cheap to last me until 1st feb
