Live Bargain Feeds Now on Trial Wiki Page - Help/Feedback Appreciated

I've been able to create a Wiki page with live bargain deals from the one-deal-a-day websites, so you can see all the deals on one page… please see the results here:

http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/playground:playground

I was planning to use this to replace the list of one-deal-a-day sites but I figure there could be some problems with it and updates aren't instantaneous due to some lag with the original feeds, Yahoo Pipes, and the Wiki refresh.

I'm also thinking it could be cool to run the Dominos Pizza Coupons through a feed so expired coupons are filtered out automatically and vouchers are sorted by price. I think that the pizza coupons would draw a number of visitors to the site from search engines so it would be helpful to keep it in good order.

Also, does anyone have experience with Yahoo Pipes or a similar free service that we could use to run some of the feeds? So far I still intend to look at adding the COTD price into the title, but I'm sure others might be able to do this kind of thing very easily. I think the Google AppEngine might be able to do this kind of thing a lot better but I haven't any idea on how to use it.

Any feedback, ideas or suggestions?

  • Very interesting use of wiki and its RSS feature :) Well done!

Do you know what this means?

For parsing the XML feeds, SimplePie is used. All formats understood by SimplePie can be used in DokuWiki as well.

You'll have to excuse my ignorance, but what are the "formats understood by SimplePie"?

        Google is your friend.

I think it refers to SimplePie PHP feed library which accepts Atom & RSS type XML feeds and is apparently quite tolerant of errors.

        Good work btw!

    • Great idea inherentchoice. I appreciate your contribution to the community :)

On a side note I haven't seen you in ages Zhenjie (welcome back)

  • I like this idea saves one retailer or vendor crowding the front page, and a central point to keep up with the current offers
