This is definitely not one to take up "just because it's free". Pets are for life!

    • +6

This should be automatically added to every pet adoption "bargain"

    • +4

If you cannot provide a good and caring home for any animal for the term of its life then do it a big favour… leave it where it is.
I shudder to think how many will go and get one of these for the kids to play with during school holidays?

      • +1

I think they will kill them if no one want them.

        • +6

If it comes to that it will be humanely. Better than being tortured or neglected I suppose?

        • +1

          @xywolap:

Better than being tortured or neglected I suppose?

What, by kids during the school holidays?

        • +5

So what if they're killed? What's the big deal about humanely putting down an unwanted animal?
It's better that they're dead than being on the street or in abusive homes.

        • +1

          Or killing native wildlife..

        • -2

Well we need to make dim sims somehow!

        • -1

          @Ryballs: That's racist

        • @Hagla:

          Garbage.

    • The shelter would probably be happy to at least have foster carers for a while, if someone tries but find pet ownership isnt for them then isnt it better they tried than not at all?
Worst case the cat is dropped back at the same shelter and they put it down same as they will if nobody takes it.
So long as it was properly treated of course.

        Sex bomb, sex bomb
        You're a sex bomb
You can give it to me, when I need to come along
        Sex bomb, sex bomb
        You're a sex bomb
And baby you can turn me on.

    • Erm.

    • +7

      At least these lick themselves.

      • +1

I take it you don't like doing the hard work, right?

        • Nope

    • -1

Your failed attempt at humour is amusing.

    • Lol, 10+ down votes for that! Sour pussies galore.

  • +1

Only interested if they have a grumpy cat :)

    • -1

ROFL - now THAT is a plan.

Feed them up, a bit of spray paint to colour match. Market them as clones.

  • +2

All cats come fully vaccinated, desexed and microchipped.

    Nice one.

    • +10

Still need to be registered (NSW laws, not sure on VIC's ones) though. And fed. And the vet bills. And it'll need the most over-the-top cat tree available when Deals Direct do a free shipping deal (that they'll never play with). And a Schticky to get rid of the cat hair all over your clothes. But most of all, you need to be able to cope with the condescending looks from your cat when you sit at your keyboard (possibly as it sits on your keyboard) and you purchase something you don't need, just because it was a good deal.

      • +1

Don't forget the love and companionship that an appreciated pet gives.. even if they buy things for you on the net!! Been there, done that! :-)

  • +8

Clearance sale? New models coming in soon?

  • +3

Reminds me of this sign at the local vets "unattended children will be given caffeine and a free kitten'

Got my fur baby over six months old from a cat shelter 12 plus years ago. Still as naughty as ever.

    • -5

A pussy that's naughty? Gee you don't see that often…

    • +1

Ours was a rescue one too.. she is about the same age as yours.

  • +5

400 Since September last year is truely disappointing to hear.

    • +4

Hundreds of millions of "companion animals" bred every year just to be killed. Approx 70 billion "food animals" bred every year just to be killed. Reason: 99% of people see nothing in nonhumans apart from instrumental value. Sad.

    • +1

It's better they dump them at a shelter then letting them go.

  • +4

If your going to get a cat keep it inside. It will live longer, won't kill wildlife and won't bother your neighbours.

    • What about a quail?

      • What about them? They would fly away if you didn't keep them confined.

      • Quails are for eating

        • +2

          you can eat cats too

  • What's the return policy? Will I get a refund or a voucher? I'm looking for a black and white model year 2014, any in stock?

  • -2

    Free meat…

    • +3

I see no problem eating cats, we eat many other animals such as rabbits, pigs, chickens, pigeons and ducks that are kept as pets. I would like to try cat meat however it's illegal to sell cat meat, so you would have to slaughter your own cats if you wanted to try cat. I think it's ridiculous the taboo surrounding eating pets such as cats.

      • +5

        Not sure if serious…

        • +1

Either way @bargainquail has mental health issues.

        • +2

I'm serious, what mental issues? Do you eat pork, rabbit or duck? These are all kept as pets as are cats. I really don't know why you think I have issues.

        • -1

          @BargainQuail:

If you're serious, then don't forget dog and horse, which is probably more commonly accepted than cat.

        • +1

@danzha: Don't have a problem with them either

  • I adopted (at full price) a cat from a adoption centre (not Lord Smith) about 6 months ago, one of the best decisions I've made. If you have the time and dedication to look after a pet it's a great move, you will be rewarded constantly. If you don't have the time to give to a pet, in the interest of the animal leave it for someone that will give it what it the love it deserves.

    • -2

Do you find that the cat is as well behaved as perhaps a purrbred kitten would have been?

      • +3

        The pure-bred cats are snobbier.

  • +1

    Free shipping included?

  • +6

    Not a deal.
My cat has cost me $7000 over 12 years.
Though I once heard owning a pet is a long term investment, so she may finally become profitable this year…?

    • +1

      Is she delicious?

    • +2

Still a better love story than Twilight.

    • My kitty cost me $6200 last year, and died. That's just life.

      • My only pet peeve (pun not intended) about owning a pet is losing it. The emotional attachment you have and then suddenly they just die, it's very painful tbh. I'm sorry for your loss Cluster, and yes it is just life and it sure is a real bitch.

    • -2

My cat has cost me $7000 over 12 years.

What the hell are you doing? Underground cat-fighting ring?

I've had three cats in my life (current is over 10 years old; previous ones lived to at least 12 years) and they all visited the vet only once in their lifetime to be desexed. That was maybe a $100 dollar outlay.
Fancy Feast is regularly 80c a can at Coles.
The scratching posts I buy are $25 dollars and last for a good 6-8 months.
Cat litter is $4.70 for 10Kg.

You're doing something very wrong or you're one of those people who substitutes children for pets and lavishes them with pet insurance/pet clothing/cat doll houses etc…

      • +2

Or you know, i preferred to keep my cat alive after she got run over by the neighbours and vet orthopaedic surgery bills aren't free…

        • +1

Forgive me, oh Noble One. I guess my psychic powers pale in comparison to yours.

The way you worded it; "$7000 over 12 years" clearly implied you were tallying up a total cost of ownership for a pet over its typical lifetime.

If you had said "my cat cost me $7000 after one small accident", then I could have made that connection.

Still, cats are usually a very inexpensive pet to keep.

    Catbargain.com.au:

Oh hai, ever thought 'I can haz slave?' Well, the humans are coming as the cat prison has waived human adoption fees. Remember to purr real loud, show the biggest doe eyed look you can, and meow to pick up a human slave of your very own. Don't forget to negotiate extra kibbles and that mousy thing on a string.

    • -3

Sorry mate but WTF is your point? I bought my baby cat (5 years old now but still my baby) in a pet store and she didn't have to do anything at all for me to like her (she was actually sleeping in the middle of other sisters and brothers). I am sure that in a pet store there is way more people coming and going them any shelter. So you know, in my opinion, it is all about "love at first sight".

      • +3

Relax, it was meant to be a joke based on an old popular meme. I love cats, always have. They adore humans and we welcome their companionship. Sometimes our kitties can be very demanding little creatures (the saying goes dogs have owners, cats have staff), but that's half the fun in tending to kitty's needs.

        • Sorry buddy, it is just that I sometimes I loose my mind when talking about cats. Anyway…

        • @stellaaddicted: FYI, article on cats causing mental illness: http://time.com/3912258/cats-parasite-mental-illness/

        • [@stellaaddicted(/comment/3366525/redir): No problem. I'm looking at getting another cat soon after my last one died late last year. Will get one from a local shelter.

        • @blerk:

          cats causing mental illness

Toxoplasmosis is a parasite that can infect cats, as well virtually every other mammal. It's not generated by cats exclusively.

It's usually spread by mice and rats. Cats are carriers of the parasite because of their close proximity to and common predation of mice/rats.

Toxoplasmosis can also be contracted from poorly cooked food and exposure to livestock or farming environments.

There exists a lot of tabloid speculation out there because the parasite is one of the world's most prevalent (50% or more of global population is a common estimate), so researchers have tried to link it to everything from men acting more aggressive and being prone to rage, women acting more sexually promiscuous, increases in schizophrenia, bipolar personalities, OCD, car crashes and other mental illnesses.

The problem is that it's so asymptomatic there's no way to verify anything without a blood test and most people who have Toxoplasmosis are completely unaware of it and more to the point, are biologically and immunologically healthy.

  • I've never had a cat before. Are they any good??

  • Own a cat and the world will love you. Spent around 16k on my cat before he died (thats just vet bills, not food toys etc, low immune system, scratches would get infected easily). He almost reached 19. Loved him to death. Would still get another even if I had to spend the same amount all over again. Cant right now cause unemployed.

Anyone feeling sorry for me in any way is urged to hook me up with a wealthy single woman. Like super gross rich. Thanks!

  • All my pets go to Lort Smith for vet care and I adopted my dog from there. They're a not for profit, no-kill shelter. The only time they put down an animal is when they can't save it. The animal will stay at Lort Smith for as long as it takes for it to get adopted. If you're interested, you'll get interviewed.

The Lost Dogs Home are the ones who put animals down when they dont get adopted in a certain time period (not sure how long but not long), which is why they lost their contract with the City of Melbourne Council a few years ago.

And yes pets cost a lot of money. Example of what I pay: Pet insurance for 2 cats and a dog $96/mth, council yearly registration $21/cat and $40/ dog, flea and worming treatment ~$10-15/mth/animal, yearly vaccine/ health check up ~$70/ animal, food depends on the brand you buy. One of the cats has dental problems and she needs a special diet which costs $60 for 5.6kg food. Then she has to get dental cleaning which cost $400-500 and she's had to have them pretty much yearly. Vet bills vary from clinic to clinic. I had one clinic quote me over $1000 to do the dental cleaning.

If you can't give it the care and attention it needs, then don't get a pet. A lot of pets are given up because their owners can't pay for treatment.

  • We rescued or norwegian forest cat rspca yagoona here in sydney, he was 8 years of age and had been dumped in an afterhours cage overnight last december, he has stomach issues and had severe mange, he still has stomach issues sometimes but damnit we are glad we got him and so were the staff as they had kittens and they said people rarely adopt adult cats, he doesnt cost much to keep so long as he has a good sunny area to sleep in, he eats most cat foods and strangely tomatoe juice, corn, cheese and other odd things, he will only use one type of cat litter has to be wood catlux cant be crystals or paper, they dont cost much but ownership is definately not for life not just a few months till you cant be bothered
