With Dick Smith's recent voluntary administration, there has been a lot of talk about gift cards and deposits, however not much information has been given regarding extended warranty. Extended warranties are much more valuable since the item purchased is usually in excess of $1000+, and you've probably paid at least $100 or more for extended piece of mind for that expensive purchase.
Through thorough research I'm lead to believe that their extended warranty is handled by "The Warranty Group Australasia Ptd Ltd" who have been trading for over 50 years. I have contacted them today regarding their position in extended warranties through Dick Smith and will post when I have received information. Hopefully this will be some good news for customers with extended warranty.
Obviously your manufacturer warranty still stands as per normal, however there is a question mark above Dick Smith branded merchandise. Under Australian Consumer Law faulty products must be repaired of replaced if found faulty within a reasonable timeframe/expected normal life of the product. It just may be harder to claim this in the current climate. Will post when more information is acquired.
I think you will be ok with your warranties. Extended warranties are generally through a third party as you stated- the retailer has no evolvement apart from selling it to you. I would expect even DSE equipment to be handled in the same manner. The third party accepts liability for a faulty product for a set time for a fee. Short term (standard warranty) may be problematic with DSE. If you have extended warranty on a product (DSE)that breaks inside the standard warranty period and is not honoured, maybe hold onto it untill the extended warranty kicks in and submit it to the third party and advise it has only just become faulty. I feel sorry for people that wers screwed with there cheap gift cards. Good to see kogan and a few others honouring them though.
