Part Time and Casual Hours

Is there a limit to how many hours you may do for casual and part time? I mean there a certain hours which u need to work, but you could possible do 10hours a day for casual or part time for 5 days? So 50 hours in total a week for one job.

  • As much as your employer wants you to do and paying for it. Who is stopping you to work ?

    A casual employee:

has no guaranteed hours of work
    usually works irregular hours
doesn't get paid sick or annual leave
can end employment without notice, unless notice is required by a registered agreement, award or employment contract.

There is no set limit for hours of work for casuals.

    HOWEVER

    A part-time employee:

works, on average, less than 38 hours per week
usually works regular hours each week
is entitled to the same benefits as a full-time employee, but on a pro rata basis
is a permanent employee or on a fixed-term contract.

    A Part-timer works less than 38 hours a week.

Needless to say, an employer cannot have you under both a part time and casual arrangement at the same time. If he wanted you for 50 hours a week and this happens on a regular basis, he's probably asking for far too many hours anyway.

    • Well played Scrimshaw - beat me to it and included references!

  • There is no limit on the numbers on the maximum number of hours you can work, however there is laws on the how many days you can work without a break and how many hours you need off between shifts. The main difference between Part time and casual is that the contract will determine the minimum number of required hours per week for a part time and a casual is only required to would once a fortnight I believe. Unless the contract for the part time states a maximum number of hours then I don't see an issue, this might be required as they hire you for 20 hours a week and then roster you on for 50 hours, you might have grounds to legally decline these hours. Along with casuals are usually paid more but have no leave available and don't require a reason for dismissal.
