Baby Proofing Tips and Advice

Hey everyone, looking for some advice on best way to baby proof a house, my almost 7 month old has discovered crawling and therefore is into everything. What are the most important things to get? Also, is there something to put around a power board, as he seems to have a tendancy to crawl towards cords.

Already looking at outlet plugs and cupboard locks, anything else essential from people with experience?

Thanks

    • Padding for sharp corner on tables / bench top.
    • Gate for kitchen / stairs
    • Make sure there's nothing he/she can climb on

We used child-safe powerboards like this

Also, If you have an electric stove with the knobs on the front, I'd strongly suggest getting covers for the knobs (something like this )

When one of my kids reached walking age, she used to turn on all the hotplates and oven and then walk off.

You can get little plastic cages for Powerboards, but I've found them to be useless.. as they leave no room for power bricks.
It's really just about being tidy and keeping things out of reach.

Prevention is the best cure so I'd go with sterilisation and/or castration.

  • Got to admit, my idea of baby proofing is to be on the Pill.

Congratulations on the baby. There are a lot of sites out there if you Google "baby proofing houses". From friends who have had children the thing to keep in mind is they move more quickly, and have longer arms, than you think. My sister reversed the idea of a play pen by using her sewing machine inside the play pen, that was stray pins etc weren't a problem.

    • The reverse play pen is a great idea, put a gate around the cat food and stove. Thanks

    • We do the same for the Gas heater during Winter.
I've also taken the playpen away on Holiday along with a bag of Zip ties to secure stairs and enclose the back-yard.

  • Supervision is the key, and be consistent with what they are allowed to get into or not. Diversion is good too, make sure they have something to play with handy. Give them a kitchen draw/cupboard they can go to town with, plasticware is great, but lock up the chemicals and sharps.

Biggest ones seem to be pulling the iron down on top of them and getting tangled in the cords for blinds.

having said that, we were v lucky with our three they just didn't get into stuff and couldn't climb either. Got to about 3 before they could climb onto the couch.

  • I only did the cupboards where there was poison/detergents/soaps ,etc. also a gate for the stairs.

    didn't worry about power points.

they say you should look out for long hanging blinds/curtain cords which are low hanging and a toddler could garrote/choke themselves on.

  • General rule of thumb- move everything to higher ground.

My son (2 years old now) has been pretty good. The worst thing he's managed to do so far is to grab a full container of Keen's curry from the pantry and do some finger painting with it on the kitchen floor. That was the prompt to get a latch on the pantry lol
