Malaysia Airlines Allowing Only Carry on Luggage as Temporary Measure

According to ABC news, Just in, and Australian Frequent Flyer News,
Malaysia airlines are not going to allow passengers to check in luggage on any flights to Europe,
unless you are flying on their A380. This means you will have to make other arrangements and luggage will not travel on same flight as you.

You can carry on 7 kgs in Economy and 14 kgs in Business class. They cite longer flight routes ( and additional fuel costs) and safety issues. How much will your winter coat weigh?

Sounds like the perfect way to lose passengers to me.
How temporary will it be?

  • Reason? News source or links?

  • Story from ABC site. Not sure how this is meant to work. Do they have cargo planes lined up for the luggage?

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-01-05/malaysia-airlines-temp…

"Passengers who wish to check in their luggage will be able to do so, however their baggage will only arrive later." - they don't say how much later on. Do people need to hang around the airport or do they need to pick it up later?

It will be interesting to see how this plays out as well.

  • If this is a security measure, this is what you call overkill.

MAS, stop with the bandaid fixes and find a proper solution.

  • and from another article

“In the interest of safety, Malaysia Airlines currently operates a long route to Europe via Egypt airspace, which combined with strong head winds, is delaying flights and limiting the airline’s baggage capacity. This longer flight path consumes more jet fuel and for safety reasons, Malaysia Airlines has had to impose a temporary limitation on checked-in baggage,” Malaysia Airlines said.

The restriction initially affected the carrier’s Amsterdam, London and Paris services, although normal baggage allowances have since been restored on its Airbus A380-operated London route. “Baggage limitations however, still apply for flights to Amsterdam and Paris on Jan. 5-6, 2016,” the airline said.

A strange way of handling the issue. Other airlines will just bump passengers to balance the weight/fuel issue.

Maybe they think this way they can avoid denied boarding compensation, a short term fix, but a great way to upset customers who will remember this for the long term.

  • Just get one of these. Problem solved.

Don't wear that at the airport! That looks mighty suspicious. Gosh, if I saw someone wearing that I'd be running as far as I can from them

  • And people ask me why I prefer AirAsia over Malaysia Airlines (apparently a full service operator)

    • Then I suggest you catch AirAsia to Europe.

      • Got em

        Generally speaking.
Since I never travel to Europe…..

  • Australian Frequent flyer forum is reporting that this embargo has been lifted and you can now check in your luggage on your trip tp Europe. Such a shame that they imposed ban in first place. Will have put a real dent into passengers confidence in future operations.

  • With all the bad publicity one after another Malaysian Airlines had recently, instead of trying to woo passengers back, kind of they now want to shoot themselves in the head as they have already shot both feet.
