don't bother, they're soft as. buy the 18-105 VR if you can find one, they're good for a wide variety of situations and it's not that often you'd want the extra reach of 200mm (if you can ,stretch to the 18-200, the optics are better which for a 24 megapixel sensor is important).

    • agree, wasnt happy with any of them slow 70-210, 70-300 f4/5.6 things

better off spending a bit more and going a bit faster, you dont need to go f2.8, i mean who has the money, but some middle ground

I bought one when I first got my D3200 for around $130 I think from kogan, this was a couple years ago. I still sometimes use this lens on my D7100 if I need the reach.

I was surprised how well my photos came out as I wasn't expecting anything sharp as it is a cheap lens.

200mm focal length is great if you take shots like pets running around, sports, zoo, etc. Otherwise I wouldn't really use it that much. The 18-105mm as suggested above would be a bit to short in those situations IMO. Really depends though what you plan to shoot. Most beginners seem to think they need the extra reach when they probably don't. If it wasn't for the pet photos and occasional sporting event, I don't think I'd ever use this lens.

Here's some shots I've taken with this lens:

Also I doubt the 18-200 is noticably sharper than the 55-200 in the long range. Actually the 55-200 has a higher dxomark score, but on the field I would say you can't tell the difference. Your paying for the convenience of just having 1 lens vs a 2 lens combo. If you need a convenient all in one travel lens, then this may be the way to go but not sure you would get much if you sell the 18-55 which I'm guessing you currently have.

    • Perfect.

      Great Advice.

      Beautiful picture above.

i want it for Cricket. We have a small cricket team on Sunday. I want to take playing shots.

You reckon 55-200 will be good for sport shots?

Hard part if your new to photography is focusing for action shots. You need to become familiar with AF tracking. Use burst mode as well for continuous shooting. And fast shutter speed. If you're not familiar with manual camera settings, there should be a sports mode setting in your camera.

As for cricket shots, if your shooting from the boundary I'm not sure if 200mm will be enough. I haven't tried cricket myself so can't really say, but going off my shots from the tennis which is closer to the action, I wouldn't expect you to get tight shots of the players without some cropping later.

        • Probably use my tripod and remote for closer shots, as long as they don't hit the camera
