  • Seems to be another of their own brand's, like Benzer. I might check it out in store. They also have other items under Zuhause brand which seem to be inspired by well known brands/designs however seems to be better quality than the Benzer brand. As per the steak knives below.     Anyone know if these are dishwasher safe?

      In case this is a legitimate question, you should never run a wooden chopping board through a dishwasher as it will dry it out or get moisture into it which will cause it to warp or split.

  • Are they good? Some bamboo one shed specks of wood or stuff even when new, so we just use plastic ones now.

      Yeah all that nasty organic stuff treated with food grade oil - much better to each bits of petrol-chemical. !? ;-)

      Hardwood are probably the pick of the bunch nfr. bamboo are effectively glued fibres, stone will ruin your knives - so at least hardwood has a bit of give. The plastic ones are handy as they can go through the wash, so pretty good for the likes of fish and stronger smelling or staining foods.

    Just thought I'd point out these boards are crap if your serious about your knife.

    The cutting action should be parallel with grain of the wood, all of these are perpendicular.

      That's a bit extreme for anyone not using crazy sharp knives and obsessively keeping the edge up. Sure end grain boards are better for knives but being bulky and heavy makes them a pain to wash & dry (which for most people means they don't get used as much). Not to mention that a decent end grain hardwood board is many times the cost of these. There are plenty of people out there buying bamboo boards which, despite being end grain, are much worse on knives than these due to the amount of glue holding everything together.

      For anyone scared off by the fact that these will ruin your knives, don't freak out. Poor care and cutting technique is much worse for your knives than cutting across the grain.

    • I was browsing a woodworking forum two nights ago. They were saying to design them so the end grain is to the top of the cutting board. I was thinking of making some. So now I'm confused… Is end-grain-up ok for knives!?

      • Yep, end grain boards are best for your knives…unless it's bamboo or something with loads of glue. The glue is much harder than timber (which dulls the edge quicker) and if there's too much of it then it doesn't allow the grain to separate which negates the benefit of an end grain board.

        • Oh, I see… because the wood fibres are all upright, it doesn't matter which direction you 'saw' in. At first I thought they might have been saying it would hold up more against knife cuts - thus not caring about the knives, only the appearance/longevity of their cutting boards. Thanks.

    I was checking these boards out over the weekend - the Zuhause + Benzer branded boards are rather thin so they're probably more ideal as presentation boards, rather than chopping boards. They might be able to handle some light 'chopping' action, e.g. from cutting cheese or meats.

    You're better off checking out actual chopping boards like Peer Sorenson, which are currently half price off RRP at Victoria's Basement. A few of these are cheaper at Kitchenware Direct.

    • You can get a great selection of Peer Sorensen boards on their eBay store. Personally, I'd pay the extra and get the end grain boards. Your knives will thank you for it. A good chopping board should last many many years.
