Buying a MacBook Air 13" 128GB

My wife is after a new macbook air and having missed out on the eBay sale due to it closing early and not wanting to buy a grey import I just went to see if anyone has seen any better deals then the option below.

HN- $1348 - $25 voucher = $1323 (I spoke to live chat they won't price match OW then let me apply the voucher)

Anyone seen any better deals?

Cheers!

If you're able to wait a couple months, rumour has it there's a new model coming out with a Retina display. Either way will help to knock the price down.

there is none there at the moment but the apple refub stope is my first stop. check there daily as stock levels fluctuate. (http://www.apple.com/au/shop/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/ma…)

    • Refurb Tracker can alert you to new stock becoming available.

  • JB Hifi and Dick Smith are always ready to negotiate if you can bring them down by talking. Good luck.

    • Yes, Never buy anything without at least trying to bargain.

  • you missed it by a week, when DSE has 10% off macbooks and Woolies is doing 10% bonus on DSE giftcard. If you're not in a hurry wait for a few weeks, Coles/Woolies is doing the bonus DSE giftcard thingy quite often

    • What's DSE please ?

      • Dick Smith

        • Thanks.

  • I got mine at DJs when it was on sale. $1249 + 10% off gift cards + TRS = $1023. I also used employee discount for extra 10% off but guess most of us won't have access to that, so I got it for $920 effectively.

  • I wouldn't get a MBA - the line is about to be refreshed, their screens are rubbish (yes, we don't live in 2010 anymore), only 4GB of RAM and they don't offer anything unique enough over the rMBP 13" that would make me want to go with an MBA. The rMBP 13" looks much better, performs much better, has a vastly superior screen and will probably last you a much longer time. Sure, battery life isn't as long, but you get back much better performance and screen.

Yes, you do pay more for an rMBP, but if you spend every single day of your life for a few years staring at a particular screen, I'd want that to be a good screen. Think about it for a second - it's $600 or so more, if you use that for 4 years, that's 41 cents per day, I'd pay 41 cents per day any day of my life to get that retina screen over the 2010-spec screen on the MBA.

    • Funnily enough the JB salesperson told me the same thing I am open to getting the rMBP 13"- where is best for one of them though?

    • I agree with most of your points, paulsterio but if the OP's wife is after an ultra-portable then the current Dell XPS 13 is a much better option for all the reasons you named in your first paragraph. It even looks sleeker with its 5mm screen bezel. I really can't think of a good reason one would by an MBA, except if you want to get a nod of approval from your hipster mates.

      • I agree, but if she wants a Macbook, then she wants a Macbook. Sometimes some people prefer OSX. I used to be one of those guys who would go around trying to tell people why they should use Windows and Android rather than OSX and iOS, but these days, I think people just have their preferences and there is some value in owning a Mac, their hardware is pretty reliable for the most part.

I would get the XPS for myself any day- have had one before and it worked a dream but the wife definitely wants a Macbook have tried to convince her otherwise to no luck.

  • I thought they were going to cancel the MacBook Air series this year since the MacBook, just MacBook over took its thin design, so they should go on sale later this year

  • Have a look at other thin laptops, I prefer the ASUS ux305 series

Resale value of Apple products is quite extraordinary. I have a 4year old MBA that I can still get more than half what I paid for it. No other line gives this kind of resale.

Another point to get more "discount" is to buy within 30days of you or a friend/relative going overseas: Get the 10% GST back.

  • Love my macbook air

  • I'm still trying to get a Macbook Air 13" 256g from David Jones but Perth not getting any because of Dick Smith trading issues and everywhere else won't sell me one because I have gift cards to use. STUCK.

Now I'm trying to sell all my gift cards on OZBARGAIN hoping someone will purchase them. (Classifieds).
    Aghhhh

  • Buy from Apple refurb store. Get the Macbook Pro Retina first, play around for a week, you'll get hooked to retina and wouldn't want to go for Air 13. The weight diff between the two is 200gms. In case you don't like it, you can always return without any questions.
Refurb store has plenty of 2015 models at a good discount.

  • I'd wait - like wanga said, there are strong rumours that new models are coming out - even potentially a MBA 15"! (Fingers crossed).
So if wifey can wait, hold off until the range is updated to bring the price down of the current version available .
A great website to check out to guess-imate when it's due is http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#MacBook - they show you how many days have passed since the last update.
If she can't wait - refurb all the way.
