Use WISH Giftcard to purchase another giftcard

Hi all,

Trying to find out if this is possible. I have a few WISH gift cards handy, and could use them to buy some giftcards for other companies at Woolies (JB, Freedom etc).

Does anyone know if this is acceptable? I have done some research and it seems to be a mixed response on old threads.

I read the FAQ on the giftcard website and all it says is

Gift Cards and eGift Cards cannot be used to make credit card payments or other transaction account deposits.
Gift Cards and eGift Cards cannot be used to load funds onto a Woolworths Money Prepaid MasterCard® or a Woolworths Money Re-loadable Prepaid MasterCard.
Essentials Cards and Groceries Only Cards cannot be used to purchase Alcohol, Tobacco Products, Gift Cards or eGift Cards.
Gift Cards and eGift Cards are non-refundable following the loading of funds onto the Card. Gift Cards and eGift Cards cannot be exchanged for cash. Cash cannot be withdrawn from the available balance of a Gift Card or eGift Card.

In Woolies' mind: Nope it is illegal and it carries a 1000 year gaol sentence
In OzBargainer's minds: Easy. Just go to self serve. I've done it myself many times! :)

    • How does one do this at self serve, how is the card activated?

Would like to know before attempting this.

      • It phones home and activates by itself?
I don't know, all I know I scan the card barcode and walla it works. Just make sure you get a little slip of paper which is the activation slip

      • I've never had any trouble using gift cards to buy gift cards in Woolworths, either at check out or self serve.

In the last few weeks I've bought about $4000 in gift cards using gift cards in woolworths & big w, both at check out and self check out. Woolworths is completely fine with it. No issue, ever.

Self Check out is basically scan the gift card as per normal and pay. It activates the card for you. you get your normal receipt and a separate activation confirmation receipt.

The only real issue is Big W - Big W cracked it when they had the 10% of gift cards deal recently so now you can't use Big W gift cards to buy gift cards. However, when i was challenging a worker on it, he said that we could go back to buying non-Woolworths group gift cards when the sale/promo was over in the New Year. I haven't tested this yet. But you can't use Big W gift cards to buy Wish Cards in Big W (unless of course staff start getting lazy again now that the sale is over)

        • Woolies self-checkout is the easiest place to convert giftcard to another giftcard because it does everything automatically, no need for staff intervention.
Coles is a bit more difficult but not so much because every giftcard purchase require the attending staff to visually inspect the card, but they're normally too busy attending other customers so they usually just approve it and walk away, let you do the payment yourself by whatever mean you like.
Big W, on the other hand is pain in the ass and you have to be extremely lucky to score this conversion, self checkout doesn't work (at least with Big W/Wish giftcard that doesn't have nominated amount on it), staff have to do manually enter the amount and activate it for you and most of them is known to not allowing giftcard purchase by giftcard.

        • What a wonderful wealth of shared knowledge from those above. Thanks

  • On a different note, are you Agg from OCAU

  • Can you still buy gift cards with egift?

    • It's getting more and more difficult to do this so don't buy an egiftcard unless you know that you can use the full value of the card for the specific store that it was originally purchased for.

      • Thanks looks like woolies dont offer them anyway just hoped it was the quicker option.

  • Can you buy wishgiftcard using wish e-giftcard?

    • +1

      Yes you can.

I do this so I can use it at Caltex/ Woolies for petrol.

      • Did you pay & choose amount at manned-register or self service?

        • I always use the manned registers.

        • Self service is fine too. It will call the assistant to come over though, because there is no "type your own" amount option, so they need to type in manually. It's good for custom amounts as well (in case you want to combine your residual $3.12 egifts)

Some inexperienced staff will send you to manned registers (Macquarie centre woolies self service staff) saying its a new policy. I've done conversion of egift to wish cards countless times ever since at different woolies at self service without any problems.

Retail staff: its policy (whenever they don't know the reason)

  • Sorry to rehash an old thread, but is this still able to be done? I am lucky enough to get giftcards through work but wouldn't mind once in a while changing them to eb, jb, etc.

    • I just bought 100$ Jetstar giftcard from Coles in Wynnard 2 days ago by using Coles eGiftcard.
The staff helped me at the self-service.
I went home, booked my flight, scratch the pin and payment is made.

  • I did try once before but got told u couldnt do it. Will have to question their policy and see what excuse they use to try and get out of it lol

Can you buy Visa/MC pre-loaded gift cards with Wishcards at Woolies (or other Woolworths stores)? Or has this been disabled at checkout?

Trying to use 5% off Wishcards to buy Visa/MC gift cards at minimum cost.

    • +1

      I did with no issues

Yep, It worked for me. Also used a Wish card to buy two $20 Google Play cards…

    • Works with no issues at all.

Trying to use 5% off Wishcards to buy Visa/MC gift cards at minimum cost.

      What saving?

Those visa/mc giftcards have an initial purchase fee of $5.95 applied to them. So card value + $5.95 = what you buy them at.

They only come in $50, $100 or $200 options. So the first two you're losing money, and on the $200 one, you're saving a whopping $4.05 after buying it for $205.95.

      Is it REALLY worth it?

      • +1

I don't think there are any $200 ones sold at Woolies.

The $50 you're absolutely losing money.

The $100 one, depending on what card you use to pay..

        • Firstly, $105.95 at 5% is $100.65. $100.65 for $100
        • That's a 0.65% "surcharge"
        • However, if you use an AMEX Explorer, you'd get 200 AMEX Membership Rewards Gateway Points ("$1.50")
        • If you use an AMEX Platinum Edge, you'd get 300 AMEX Membership Rewards Ascent Points ("$3")

Factor the points in, and you're actually ahead.

Of course, the value of the points varies from person to person, but I've used a standard valuation of 1c/FF equivalent point.

I'll elaborate if you want me too but I think that's enough detail for now.

        Is it REALLY worth it?

So - it comes down to how much you value the points. If the points are worth it, then yes it is.

However, I'd be curious to know if any Woolies actually sell a $200 version anywhere? I don't think I've ever seen one, because they would be even more worth it.

        • Firstly, $105.95 at 5% is $100.65. $100.65 for $100

You can't buy a giftcard valued at $105.95 via the discount sellers. So you'll have to 'buy' more value than you need to get the full 5% saving. ie $100 + $20

          That's a 0.65% "surcharge"

          ok agreed

So - it comes down to how much you value the points. If the points are worth it, then yes it is.

So basically, you do all this work to get an extra $1.50-3 in 'points' for the time spent. But wait, you paid a 65c 'surcharge' on these, so that value is NOW just 85c to $2.35, depending on what card you used.

I guess it depends on how much you value your time at the end of the day.

I'd be curious to know if any Woolies actually sell a $200 version anywhere?

They sell $200 ones at auspost, I assumed woolies/coles sells the same product. Haven't really looked myself.

          • @JimmyF:

You can't buy a giftcard valued at $105.95 via the discount sellers

You actually can, when you go to the site via Cashrewards, you can choose whatever amount you want (up to $500 per card). So if you put in an amount of $105.95, you get get charged $100.65.

They sell $200 ones at auspost, I assumed woolies/coles sells the same product

I've spent a lot of time at multiple Woolies/Coles stores and they only sell $50 or $100 Visa cards.

        • I've seen the $200 visa cards at a Woolworths before. They had a $7.95 fee. Next time I went they were gone. The person who goes around restocking the giftcard racks must have put them there by mistake.

      • I am not buying the gift cards to use myself - they are actually for gifts to others so I am just trying to eliminate/minimise the $5.95 charge.

        • +1

Cash is always better than a gift card that expires and/or annoying balance queries.

$200 cards don't exist at WW,at least not in the 5 or so diff stores i visit.

Otherwise your plan is fine. I'm doing this atm for a 2% saving on my tax bill.

    • +2

Yes but woolies checkout is becoming annoying just like Coles now because it requires operator's verification if you self check out. Just found out last week when purchasing Jetstar gift card. Before that you could just do your normal self service for gift cards like other groceries. So it can be annoying if you want to do multiple single purchases to take advantage of their promotions like bonus 2000 points for each whatever giftcard.

      • Just had the same problem. Woolies definitely required me to go to the service desk to process the gift cards. Was still able to pay with gift card, but I could see this being a problem in the future.

  • Merged from Buy JB Hi-Fi Gift Cards with Woolies Wish Cards?

I can get a 5% discount when buying Woolies Wish Cards. Is it possible to buy, say $2500 worth of JB Hifi gift cards using the discounted Wish cards?

    • All that work for $125 saving……

Anyhow, woolies now says no to buying gift cards with gift cards…..

      • It's only a few clicks for me. I've bought $500 for general shopping before, and it only took a couple of clicks. I've just never bought other gift cards. If they now say no to buying gift cards with gift cards, I guess it's not possible.

        • buy ebay then buy jb

        • @TarquinOliverNimrod: I'm not really sure what you mean?

        • +1

@subywagon: buy wish gift card, the use it to buy ebay gift card. then on ebay buy jb

        • @TarquinOliverNimrod:

Wish eBay wish eBay wish. With 5-15% of each time you could do this a few times and have a serious discount.

      • All that work for $125 saving……

        Gerry, is that you???

We are professionals as you know.

  • just wondering if is confirm that we can't use e-gift card now to buy another gift card at WW?
    Anyone try lately?

    Thanks

  • There is no clause in the terms saying you cannot, and given the GC has the value of currency there is no legitimate reason you cannot. I’m sure if you complained or spoke to a manager they would approve. The issue is more one of awkwardness at checkout and inconvenience. However it should be noted that at self checkout the authorisation is applied when you scan the card, not when you pay. After that point the attendant usually leaves and you can pay (or continue adding groceries) however you please.

    • There is no clause in the terms saying you cannot

Quite the contrary to what you said, in their T&Cs

What can my Gift Card or eGift Card not be used for or to purchase?

Gift Cards and eGift Cards cannot be used towards the purchase of any Gift Cards or Prepaid Cards sold through a Woolworths Group participating store.

      • Guess no chance using it then but might give it a go when i buy other groceries.

I did tried with Coles and the staff wont allow me to buy the ebay $50 (2000 bonus pt).

  • I'm looking to purchase some Coles & Myer gift cards in store at either Coles, Target, Kmart.

Anyone recently tried with self checkout?

  • Does this still work?

  • Hey,
Has anyone tried this recently? I have a wish gift card but I want to use it to purchase a David Jones gift card.
Wish gift card terms say you can’t but seems to be mixed results.
    Thanks

    • Did you end up trying - wanting to confirm this as well.
