Question RE: Australian vs. Grey Stock

Hi all,

I was just wondering what are the main cons of buying grey stock? Is it to do with the warranty and the fact that you won't really be able to claim warranty if you have a grey stock phone which breaks? I also know you need to ensure that the phone operates on the frequency bands available in Australia, however, it seems that even some grey stock do.

Also, how do you ensure what you're buying is, in fact, Australia stock?

Thanks a lot!

    What phone are we talking?
iphones will support the same bands regardless of local or grey stock. Only diff is included power supply and local warranty.

Best way to ensure is to contact the seller, ask in a forum like this one, or buy from an authorised reseller.

    • Any smart phone with a good camera. Probably looking at the Sony Z5 Dual or the LG G4 atm.

What are some authorised resellers that you know of (other than the obvious ones, like Good Guys, JB, Harvey Norman, etc)? Are all of mobileciti's stock Australian stock?

Most new models of iPhone will work in Australia. It's not true that every iPhone will support the same bands. In general, some models miss bands like 40 and 42. The worst case is the iPhone 5, US version Model A1428 GSM version. It supports LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 17. The only band of those available in Australia is 5.

Currently Australia uses 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 28, 40 and 42 (can see the frequencies at http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/mobile_phone_frequencies). Don't import a CDMA phone. Usually looking at the specs, it only takes a second to verify that the phone will be right for Australia if you know how to look.

      • Oh, interesting. Thanks for the clarification.
Knew the diff between GSM and CDMA iphone, but didn't realise the GSM models differed between US and world. Thanks

good grey importer will have local australia address where you can send your phone in case of warranty claim. note they need to approve your claim first before allowing you to send the phone.
the postage to send usually not free (but hey its local address) - and return shipping is free.
but the warranty period usually bit shorter maybe 1 year instead of 2 years as per australia law

    • Ah, that's good to hear. Thanks!
