Opinions on ASUS G771JW 17.3" FHD Gaming Laptop

Futu Online eBay store currently has this Laptop listed at $1695, after 15% off and 4% Cashback it comes down to ~$1372.

Do you guys have any experience with this laptop? Is it a good price?

Will mainly be using it for media-consumption and on occasion, photo/video editing for uni.

Also wanting to know if I'd be able to install a WD Elements 2TB Portable HDD since it doesn't come with an HDD.

Thanks in advance.

Update: Pulled trigger.

I have been researching a lot and it seems like a good deal if you dont mind the weight.

What exactly are you after such as do you game and does it need to be portable?

It will be used as more of a desktop replacement as I don't intend to take it out.
I am looking for a bigger screen (currently 15.6") and specs that will last about 5 or more years.

yeah i have on of these and lug it to work and back every day for the last few months.
yep its big and heavy and the PSU is big and heavy to boot.
for me its worth it. the screen is awesome. i use an external keyboard and mouse - the one that comes with it is okay but the key text should have been a different colour as i find it a bit hard to see when not under good light. i am not a fan of any laptop mouse pad really hence the external gear.
i like the 3 drive bays although the samsung m2.5 didnt work in the slot for me, still i have 2 x SSD in mine and 16GB of RAM (brought some extra). the machine has more grunt then some of the servers i work with. the external video port is a bit flakey, i dont find the picture qaulity that comes out via either HDMI or Display Port to be on par with the main screen.

The price is excellent for those specs; minus that tiny SSD which I would personally bump up to a 480/500/512GB.

    I've used the previous generation ASUS ROG 17.3" laptop, the G750JX (i7 4700HQ/16GB RAM/256GB SSD/GTX 770M 3GB).

The purpose you're needing one for is exactly what these monstrous gaming laptops are: desktop replacements. They'll easily handle everything, which is why for mere media playback and Adobe graphic design/editing, it's probably overkill.

Though I will say, for the price you're getting it at, it's really a no-brainer and at least you can expect to get a good 4-5 years of life out of it before you even think about an upgrade. Whacking in new 2.5" SATA HDDs or SSDs is a cinch (many guides on YouTube).

The main downsides are a lack of portability and a lack of battery life. So make sure you really are going to be using it as a desktop replacement.

The specs that I was after were hard to come by on non-gaming laptops (i7 Quadcore/17.3"/8GB ram or more). The ones that did have these specs were closer to or more than 2k which was way over my budget as I was intending to spend closer to 1k.

But like you said, with these specs for the price I couldn't pass it up.

I don't often upgrade my laptop(s), current one being from 2010. So hoping I will get around 5 years or so out of this one.
