Kitchen Cabinets

Hi Guys,
Need ozbargain community to rescue. We bought a new place and decided to renovate the kitchen as it was pretty old. We have figured out all the appliances that need to go in. Trying to find a good place (good value for money) for kitchen cabinets. We don't even know how much we expect to pay to get it done. We don't a bad quality kitchen but don't want to spend $5000 just for the cabinets either. Really finding it hard to find places which provide such services. Any suggestions and help will be much appreciated.

$5000 is VERY cheap for a kitchen, even a small one!
My kitchen built by a mate, cost me $6000 for laminate doors and it's only 2.7m x 3m!
He steered me away from the Vinyl Wrap doors as he said the vinyl loses adhesion and bubbles after a few years. Apparently when it was first introduced, they offered 5 years warranty on the doors, now they only offer 2 years and it's not unusual for warranty claims to be made in 2 years!
He doesn't like 2-pack paint either, cause once it's chipped, the entire door needs to be replaced.
He recommended laminate as the cheapest and best option unless you're going for solid wood which is of course lots of $.
Sketch up an Ikea kitchen that you like, they have free design software. Their prices are low too and you can see the price of the kitchen you've designed as you design it. From there, you can gauge quotes from other cabinet makers.

  • Defintely take Scubacoles advice and design your kitchen layout (if ur savvy enough, Google Sketchup is a pretty awesome tool to use). Check out heaps of showrooms to get ideas then put together what suits you best. Like any trade work, you can save heaps by negotiating between vendors.

I did my kitchen a couple of years ago and for polyurethane (2-pack) cabinets and quantum quartz benchtop. Total of 5 hanging cabinets, 2 regular cabinets, 1 with 4 drawers, 2 corner cabinets, 1 oven/cooktop cabinet, 1 fridge cavity with cabinet on top and sink cabinet, all with Hettich hinges and soft closing devices.

In total that cost me $6k installed (excl appliances) which I believe is hella cheap, considering I got quotes for up to $15k for the same thing or worse. I tried a couple of the kitchen franchises, but their quotes were just ridiculous (Kitchen Connection/Nobby Kitchens) and any fancy designer places are obviously expensive as well. Try places that make their own cabinets, there are a few located in Wetherill Park, Silverwater and Rydalmere.

Unfortunately I can't recommend the company I used cos they were jerks to deal with. Workmanship was good, but they don't seem to keep records of payments (kept chasing me for $ I'd already paid and had receipts for) and then refused to put the soft closers on the doors until the Dept of Fair Trading stepped in.

  • thanks a lot. I was afraid that that's what I'll hear. I can't understand why it costs that much. We were estimate 2000K for the bench top and another 2000-3000 for the cabinets and stuff. But it seems that might be a long shot. We will check out IKEA and see how we go. thanks again

  • check also the bunnings flatpack kitchens. not sure on quality, but prices seem OK. could be useful for price comparison with ikea anyway. from memory their brochure has a planner with stickers in the back.

  • Best option in my opinion would be to get the Bunnings/Ikea flat-pack cupboards and then go from there.

I have used the Bunnings ones in the past. If I can put them together, you can also. Just be careful because we bought some cupboards and we thought it included the doors but it didn't!

We also picked up some cheap sinks and fittings from eBay which saved a bit…

  • Have you tried asking a local cabinet maker rather than a full kitchen company? They may give you better deals. Alternatively, if you go the flat pack route, they can design to your specs now, making it easier if your kitchen is awkwardly shaped.

Just be careful that you don't go too cheap or you'll have to do it all again later.

Edit: Just thought of something? Are the carcasses sound? If so, you can paint them if they're looking a little drab and just put new doors/benchtops/drawers in them. Save yourself a bundle that way.
