Sorry if it is a stupid question, but can you enlighten me on how it works? Does it require to have a 3D TV to play 3D videos?

  Yes, the player allows you to play the content and you need a 3D TV and 3D glasses to watch the content

Holy shit this is old, old stock - This has been sold in Dick Smith since Late 2012, amazed that stores still have them lying about.

  May have been a steady seller and they just kept getting in more stock. The ones at my local store still had the Toll delivery labels on them dated April 2015.
