Family Holiday Destination Suggestions

Hi all

I have been tasked with organising a family holiday (8 adults and 10 kids - one child under 2). Travel period will be school holidays in Sep 2016 and initial thoughts have been Fiji, Thailand, Vietnam or an Australian island.

Essentials would be a good value for money holiday at a family friendly resort with some activities. Bonuses would be a bit of culture, history and shopping.

Some of the family do not have passports so we are leaning towards an Australian island but any suggestions welcome.

Thanks!

How about Nauru or Manus Island. Just load everyone in a leaky boat and wait, no need for anyone to have passports. Make one phone call to tip off border protection and they will take care of everything else!

It's cheap, families are catered for, lots of activities when there are riots and you'll be able to mix with people from all over the world…

    • Turn around service is free too

  • This is my experience traveling with kids and a big family group - Fiji is good for Families if you like beach holidays and cruising in a boat, locals are friendly. If you have to stay in Denarau then expect a shit fight with other Aussies at the Westin and Sheraton resorts, you'll be fighting for a spot at Buffet breakfast, cabanas, sun lounge and pools. Both resorts are also very old and rundown, you have to pay extra for ocean views. Wyhdham estate is new and modern but also expect a shit fight. If you have the extra cash stay at the Hilton, no shit fight less aussies and classier clientele. The staff are also 10x better, helpful and friendlier. All rooms have ocean views. If i ever return i noticed some private luxury residences on airbnb that can fit 10+ people which might be an option for you

Otherwise go to another island like Plantation island, or castaway island where the beachs are swimmable and you dont need to fight with bali like bogan holiday makers. Only way you will be able to escape and experience some culture

Reef wise, pretty good depending where you go a lot of bleaching in some areas and you have to dive a little deeper, The GBR is in my opinion a lot better (more wildlife, cleaner reefs). Whitsundays is another option, a few resorts are available.

you have a big enough group so private charters will be your best option, especially if you can split the costs. Cloud 9 is cool if you want to drink and relax, not so good for kids as they get bored - hence the charter so you can go and do what you like (Some of the yachts have jetskis, kayaks which are good for those teenagers) and you can pull up at 1 of the 1000's of reefs to spend some time. Big bula inflatable park is good for kids but nothing like wet and wild

Thailand and vietnam are both bang for buck, the aussie $ can go a long way.
In vietnam you could skip over HCMC and go straight to the north and visit halong bay, danang etc, really nice. Halong and phuket/phiphi island outcrops are pretty much similar in regards to formation and look. You will experience culture in all the destinations but obviously the further out you go from the city will be better. Shopping is really good in Bangkok, all the modern fasions are there and you can spend a few days shopping at the big shopping centres, or at the markets. Both thailand and vietnam have floating markets, all pretty good experiences and great food.

I honestly dont think you can go wrong with any of your options for family and children but you will need to consider what you other family members think. Personal safety home and fiji are you top choices, thailand and vietnam just snatch and grab petty crimes, and probably safer than lets say Barcelona or paris

  • So you want an island?

Do the Taylor Swift / Oprah Winfrey thing and go to Hamilton Island?

Fitzroy Island off Cairns might be alright too but it's a very small affair.

    What about Port Douglas?
