I've found this to be the best app to control your computer remotely for watching TV, listening to music etc.
The main purpose of this is to work your wifi network at home. However it can be configured to be used over the internet, it also has some IR functionality.

VNC sucks. Also nothing to do with this topic.
Touchscreen remotes offer a pretty poor experience IME due to the user having to take their eyes off the screen.
(Although this is not an issue in some usage scenarios)

Looks like your TV has to be connected to a WIFI network, and you have to be connected to that Wifi network for this to work; you won't have access unless you are in that network (i.e. hacked to get TV control).
More likely, he probably had a Samsung, LG or HTC which has inbuilt IR remote capabilities (like an actual remote, not some wifi 'remote').

Thanks OP, got the App and successfully connected to my Laptop. What else can i use it other then controlling my laptop, I have got Samsung S5 by the way

This is really for wifi. Highly useful if you like to watch shows, youtube or listen to music from your computer.
There are shortcuts on your lockscreen, so all you have to do is press one button and from there you can choose to pause, forward, skip 5 seconds, change volume etc. Quite amazing.
There are many other apps for IR. I found Peel Smart remote (Works with anything with an IR receiver, aircons too). to be the most useful, however you probably need a samsung phone with an IR blaster to use it.
I didn't like this app - was expecting a universal remote control, LOL! ah well, no big loss
