Thoughts on the 11.6inch Teclast X16 Pro - Surface 3 competitor (@ US $259.99)

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/11-6-inch-Teclast-X16-Pro-2-i…

I'm in the market to get a two-in-1 device… what are you guys thoughts of the Teclast X16?

The specs are

11.6 inch display with 16:9 FHD resolution
Intel Z8500 Quad core SOC, 1.44ghz native clock, with burst 2.2ghz frequency
4GB of RAM in dual channel config
64GB of EMMC memory
Windows 10 and Android dual boot

Type cover and Active stylus as add-ons

It's around $360au for the tablet only, and the type cover is another $50 dollars or so. A bit expensive for the accessories but I guess that's how profits are made.

Gidday scrimshaw, hope ya and all Ozbargainers are getting ready for a fab Xmas. I would tell ya exactly what my thoughts on a Teclast-X16 are, except I have absolutely no idea what that is. Sorry.

    Merry Xmas everyone.

  • If I were in your position, I'd pay extra for Surface 3, for two main reasons + one reason that can be changed given more info. Though this is just my personal opinion more or less.

    • MS provides one of the best customer service, in my opinion. Whereas Chinese vendors, you'd probably end up spending so much money on shipping (if you need to send it back for services) that you would've been able to buy a Surface 3 with without adding much to it.
    • 3:2 is better for document editing and web browsing. 16:9 has advantages with movies, but I personally think you lose so much out on documents (i.e. PDFs on portrait mode gets massive letterboxes with 16:9) that I'd rather go with 3:2.

This point probably is something that can be changed easily.

    • The stylus tech used on X16 Pro is unknown. I know that you had a SP1 (mine was replaced with SP3 by MS, after 1 month of no words from them). Even n-trig on Surface Pro 3 is worse than Wacom EMS. I am not sure how well the stylus on X16 Pro would perform (I have high doubts on them being any good). If they are using Wacom's active stylus technology, Wacom AES (which is not the one used on SP1, Wacom EMS), my opinion would change. Though until you could find out more about the stylus, I would assume that they are awful (to be on the safe side).
    • Thanks for the input.

The Surface 3 however is a lot more expensive. And I do mean a LOT more — starting at $699 and going up to $839 if you wanted 4GB of RAM.

Part of the reason I'm thinking of getting this China-tab is that it has 4GB of RAM, and also of the oversized 11.6 display. There are hardly, if any, tablets of this size in the Aussie market that also has 4GB of RAM.

The Stylus i don't actually care much about as I'm more interested in using it in laptop mode than tablet mode, and from some of the feedback on Aliexpress the stylus does actually seem a bit sketchy.

      • I personally think that much price difference is not that massive if you consider the expected life span of the tablet and how easy you could get it fixed. Surface 3, if it follows the same scheme as the Surface Pro series do, get far better warranty period (1 year vs 2 years + 1 Year Warranty on peripherals). I personally think MS would do a better job of service to begin with; faster service, more coverage, etc etc.

If you want a tablet that can act like a laptop but don't really require a stylus, I'd assume you could expand option further. Many Core M tablets, both Chinese and non-Chinese ones, would be not that far from your budget to begin with. I remember Cube i7 Stylus was around USD $300 during Black Friday, for example. Refurbished Dell Venue 11 Core M 5y10c, 4GB went for AUD $627, New Venue 11 with i5-4300Y, 256GB Solid State Drive, 8GB DDR3 went for AUD $599 (this was on 21st December, I'd assume they'd pop up again since I've seen the Venue 11 Pro with Core M many times in past as well).

        • There was a Venue 11 for $599? Oh wow, now that's something to put into my Xmas wishlist.

        • @scrimshaw: yeah an older model though. I bet it's going to pop back because it was there 3 days ago. You could check it on Google caches version.

        • @Oversimplified: yeah even I remember a few venue 11's on the outlet at that price….

  • Nice spec. Although the screen is only 1920x1080 whereas smaller Teclast X98 Pro gets 2048x1536 9.7" retina screen. The battery life might also be questionable. 32.3Wh but how many hours of operation time? I heard Teclast's 9.7" dual-boot tabs would only last 5-6 hours.

  • I ended up getting the Pendo convertible tablet from DSE. Paid $294 for it — reviewed it here

The performance is pretty pathetic compared to my first-gen Surface Pro but the display is FHD and 11.6" which meets my main two requirements, and as a bonus it's got pretty decent speakers.
