Safe to Put Power Brick on Carpet?

My desktop tower is on a table while all the computer cords are lying on the carpet floor. Is it safe to have all those computer cords/power bricks on carpet especially when it's so hot in summer? should I put a bunch of newspapers on top of the carpet to help prevent burning the carpet?

should I put a bunch of newspapers on top of the carpet to help prevent burning the carpet?

    Definitely not

    • lol was op joking?

Perhaps a little usb fan to kindle the flame er help keep it cool??

  • Better to put them on some sort of metal tray, ideally a cooling rack so you can get airflow over the bottom surface .
They shouldn't be getting so hot as to burn the carpet.. Time to replace them if they are!

    • so I guess I could use a cooking tray since it's metal?

      • Yep.. the metal will act as a bit of a heat sink.
and give a nice flat surface so any ribbing on the power adapter can work to improve airflow.

Lol, might as well just leave them in a puddle of cool petrol

I agree with what scuba wrote. One of mine gets quite warm in bed, so i put rubber pads on the bottom and it since doesnt get hot.

    • Dare I ask what you're using that has a power adapter in bed? :-)

It's not what you think, those take AA's

        • Or D's (for the more adventurous)

        • @mad__llama: They occasionally take button batteries, but you either have to compromise on runtime or power.. So not really worthwhile.

      • laptop…. sometimes 2.

        I need the i7 power

    • lol I was thinking along the same lines as you….

  • What about strapping the board onto the table side or its leg?

  • maybe you need some cable management ties. Go to a computer shop or Officeworks and buy some cable mgt hooks and clamps, these will allow you to route your cables underneath the table and away from your carpet.

These spiral tube thingies are also good for bunching the cables together and with a bit of duct tape you can also affix power cables to a desk leg.

  • How hot are we talking? Is the carpet discolouring? As long as the thing meets whatever standards are required to sell it in Australia, you'd have to be seriously unlucky for it to set your carpet on fire.
