          @highground:

Geez I wish mine was a rebadged SanDisk Extreme too ><

        • +1

          @CVonC:

          Here's a 3GB "H2testw" speed test:

Warning: Only 3000 of 59068 MByte tested.
          Test finished without errors.
You can now delete the test files *.h2w or verify them again.
          Writing speed: 89.1 MByte/s
          Reading speed: 115 MByte/s
          H2testw v1.4

EDIT: Also, the chip on the BACK of the drive has "PHISON" branding. Under the little white tick on case it says E714…. Hope that helps.

        • @highground: I'd say their guts looks pretty much different, though outside pretty much same. So thoughtful of DS…

        • @abm77:

In that case I hope the other one I bought is just as quick…!

        • +1

          @highground:

          mine says PHISON too.

EDIT: After comparing the image of @abm77 , ONLY BUY THE DRIVES WITH A LARGE (20mmx13mm) CHIP DIRECTLY UNDER THE "64" CASE MARKING. CHIP IS SAME BACK AND FRONT

here's mine. i have the large chip but on the back/bottom, although it's only on the back/bottom side. my top side has the small PHISON controller chip.

          @highground:
          Thanks for posting this highground,
So down the rabbit hole we go!
It seems there are two vastly different (10 times the speed) versions of this stick. One delivers the pissweak write rate of ~ 10MB/s IE bad USB speeds, the other an impressive 100MB/s.
It is important to buy the right one! They look near identical at first glance.

        • +1

          @CVonC:

Same controller then assumingly, different memory. As you can see mine has no PHISON chip on the front. The memory chip has a black sticker on it I think (probably covering the SanDisk logo eh?) :-P

No problems King TA - I was doubting myself in the beginning.

          No problems, thanks!

  • Looks good

  • Still $20 at 10pm last night in store

  • Went to Eastland Vic and showed them the receipt for $10, he said he wouldn't go lower than $20. Guess I will just have to wait for tonight.

  • +1

went to Liverpool last night scanned at $20 wouldn't sell below that even after I shown him the forum post. Told me to come back on Boxing day and I bet they will have none left then.

  • Hi Guys, can anyone point me to where I can order these online at 4pm?

  • +1

Not there for me either. It's past 4pm.

  • +1

    NOT ONLINE?????
    Nothing 64GB for $10…..fail!

  • It didn't end well….

No bargain if you can't buy one…

  • +3

Not another one of Dick's Dud Deals?

  • Not available online

    • Don't think it will be in stores either.

      • +1

I'm not going to waste even more time finding out…

  • +2

cant see no dick 64gb drive!

  • No go as yet…

  • The site's getting slow but still only the Emtec ones show up at 4:15. Their whole business has been a mess for months so I'd say this is probably a fizzer or they'll be a limited to 1 per customer or something similar. Last two C&C orders were total botch-ups

  • Isn't there still 45 minutes? Heat getting to you lot?

    • 4:20pm AEST (Daylight savings)

      • It says AEST. Its not 4pm AEST yet… You're thinking of AEDT.

        • +1

I reckon they're also thinking AEDT, basically isn't it always based on Sydney/Melbourne time…

    • There's this thing we have in the educated states called "Daylight Saving".

    4:05 Brisbane 64 GB NOT $10

  • Based on similar items and the item codes the 64gb the link should be http://www.dicksmith.com.au/usb-hard-drives/dick-smith-64gb-… at some point, but it could easily never be

  • there are a 3 left on the shelf @ Seven Hills (none @ Blacktown). they are letting you buy it at $10 now as they won't be open until the 27th (sunday). they didn't let me yesterday.

here are speed test results to confirm the slowness.. note only 2gb was written and verified as it'll take like over around 2 hours to do the entire drive -_- stick was connected to usb 3 port.

  • Whitfords City (WA) about an hour ago - had a number on a rack, but blocked off. The guy said the code in the cash register would not be released until Boxing Day.

  • looks like none available - wonder if they ever were ? Catalogue page was not a direct link. Any search shows nothing. Merry Christmas also x

  • Picked up 2 64GB USB's late today at Ingle Farm (SA). Thanks OP! These will make great Christmas stocking fillers :)

  • Thanks for the tips guys, knowing which one to buy is awesome. Hope I get to pick though, seems like these will go like hot cakes!

    dicks myth

  • no online link…

  • missed out on an actual deal because ozbargain is flooded with dick smith advertising.

  • Was able to get the faster one at Fairfield (only one in stock), plenty of the slower drives there (about 15) at 8am.

  • So neutral bay have apparently 30 in stock but none on the shelf. Chatswoods 90 last night was down to just 2 this morning and none on the shelf. I'm guessing we will see a fair few on gumtree/ebay unless someone has been able to order them online.

    • Ah I wouldn't buy them for any more than $10 a pop.

  • Went to Robina saw about 50-64gb usbs but they had them scattered across the store and none near the other usbs guessing to stop mass buying

  • So more lies?

  • +2

I went to my local Dick smith store on 24th, they had many in stock but were for 20$. Today, on boxing day I went early (half an hour after opening) and the guys said they are all sold out. Then I heard him saying to anther staff member that he bought the last few himself.

  • +1

Just went to Rouse Hill Dick Smith, they have lots of stock there for the 64GB behind the counter. Wasn't marked as discounted, but when I asked the cashier there they said it's $10. Not a bad price, I actually bought the same item last week for $20.

    • How is the speed/chip size?

      • that would be the question that needs an answer!

      • It's usb 3.0, but I didn't really check the actual tech spec of the speed and all. Pretty decent for my normal use.

        • Although I've pretty much given up, the question is a simple observation question. Can you see a black chip inside the green(?) plastic case that is thumbnail sized or pea sized?

        • @jso:
Oh, I just saw the link on the original postings. Yes, the one that I got was the 'high speed' one

  • Got 3 in Sale. About 5 left after lunch

  • Picked up 3 Dick Smith USB 3.0 flash drives this morning from David Jones North Ryde for $10 each. Its funny they are selling the old 2.0 USB flash drives in 32gb and 64gb for more. Go figure ? Clever Dick strikes again.

    • Any more left of the larger chip size?

  • Picked up 2 whilst holidaying in Caloundra only after convincing the assistant to check their system as they had no idea about the secret sale.

  • So if you have the slower one, are we entitled to return it? is it reasonable to say that it was not a USB 3.0 because of the speed?

  • Not seeing many reports of people finding the fast 64GB USB drive.
    Anyone else nab one?

    • +1

I found one but it was one out of 17 that was on the shelf. I looked through all of them and I'm guessing the fast one is older stock. Next to the 64gb were the 32gb ones and they were all the faster model. If they had it for $5 i would have purchased that instead.

  • +1

I went to Garden City WA, sales rep said sold out but he said I could backorder it, so ordered one. Lets wait and see.

  • -1

My local store had 7 so I asked for 6 being the first customer in a line @ 08.5 when they opened. Staff mumbled about limits but I lectured them about the ACL and got 6.
This is what happens when Nick Abboud suddenly tricked investors by claiming he could beat that farmer kid whose 2nd wife kicks ass and made him spend Ross's money wisely.
Sorry Nick, you should have taken a lesson from the original founder but you got your millions and the pension funds loose the rest. RIP DSE!

  • just order one…

  • +4

Here is the link to the 64GB USB 3.0 for $10-
    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/usb-hard-drives/dick-smith-64gb-…
Be quick - deal ends tonight. Still available for free pick up from some stores in 3-5 days after order.

    • Thnaks but no way of knowing whether we would be ordering the fast or slow unit unfortunately
      Wow Delivery charge $9.95 bastards

      • Even for the "slow" version it's still an exceptionally good price.

        • Yes good price but I wouldn't want one. The actual write speed of the slow one is 12MB/s (who ever did the final edit got it wrong) that's going to take a long time filling 64GB
I really wish a Dick Smith person could pipe up and tell us whether the fast large chip one was the newer or older stock and what we could expect if we ordered from the warehouse.

        • @King Tightarse: My gut feeling is the faster one is the old stock; the new one being cheaper to manufacture and with a higher profit margin (and still profitable to regularly sell for $10). If true, don't expect anyone from DSE to pipe up any time soon.

        • @muncan:
          Had the same thought.

        • @muncan: Of course it's a cost-saving measure, there's no way in hell they're making a profit when they're charging $10 at retail ($9.09 ex GST, or about US$6.63 at today's exchange rate thanks to the crappy Aussie dollar). Either Dick Smith or their supplier switched to something cheaper.

Costs have come way down on flash but I'd be extremely surprised if that even covered the cost from their supplier (Kingston?) in the quantities DSE would be ordering, even with the poorer performance. It's a special that's supposed to get you in there to impulse buy the crap stock they couldn't sell otherwise.

        • +2

@King Tightarse: My online order arrived today and it's the slow version, with a ~23MB/s write speed (definitely not 12 - are there three versions of this bloody thing?!). I found basically no difference between using it in a USB 3.0 port or a USB 2.0 port (which makes sense, ~30MB/s is what you can expect to get out of a USB 2.0 port - this thing doesn't exceed that).

It's safe to assume the late-appearing online stock is newer, so going forward if DSE ever run that discount again it'll probably be the slower version.

        • @lbft:
Perhaps each time they re-ordered they got different (cheaper) versions.
Anyway, great report. So it seems only old, old stock with the large sized chip, if it still in in some dusty Dick Smith somewhere, is the only "good" speedy version of this.
Imagine setting a standard with your USB sticks, then having subsequent versions perform at a tenth the speed. Talk about disappointing customers' expectations and giving up on brand management.
It really seems they dropped the ball some time ago.
